The computer never seems to go into sleep mode, and this morning when I unlocked the screen, the CPU had been at 35%, it was transferring data at about 10 Mbps over the network, and the disk was busy.

It's a clean install about a week old.

Maybe it's downloading the latest build?  I think build 10147 is pretty close to release.  Maybe even today.

Thanks.  Just searched, 10147 has been leaked but no official word.

Good point, it might have been downloading files as I had to share all of my Onedrive files with the W10 PC before I could see them locally as Microsoft seem to have ditched the placeholders that are in 8.1.

gbwelly: does powercfg /requests work on windows 10?

Definitely:

SYSTEM:
[DRIVER] \FileSystem\srvnet
An active remote client has recently sent requests to this machine.

There's a whole lot of info on the web about this problem occurring in older versions of Windows.

After a little research online, I updated the driver for the network adapter.  The PC sleeps quite happily now.

I also noticed that whenever Chrome is running with a few tabs open, the CPU load is 15-20%.

Pretty normal

I use Chrome on a few of my Surfaces as heaters in my lounge this cold winter

I just can't get the same warm toes off IE or Firefox
