So it seems I'm slowly transitioning to everyday Windows from OSX/Linux.

The Skype windows desktop client has in-ya-face flashing advertising. What the? This is a bit of a shock.

Is that advertising here to stay, or optional in some way?

Mine dosent and I only just re-installed it (Windows 7).
I run mine in Compact view, all I see is my contacts.

Just installed Skype for a new Internet user. Big, ugly, misplaced advertising.

I recall somewhere deep in Skype for Windows an option to untick advertising. I'll check when out of Ubuntu !

I wouldn't be surprised if it is re ticked with all the numerous Skype upgrades

If you have active Skype credit, you don't see the ads.

Alternately, you can turn off targeted ads, but to disable the right/east ad in the main window, I think the only way is to block skype from updating (e.g. add apps.skype.com to restricted sites - or any other way to prevent it modifying the file you're going to have to edit, perhaps a read-only file permission), and edit the config.xml in your skype profile path to set the ads enabled and placeholders to 0

Why arent I seeing the adverts ? I dont have credit on my account...... on the other hand, forget I said anything, I'll probably get home now to find advertising waiting for me....

Yes, my personal account (with Skype credits and global service) has no ads but the other accounts are full of these.

It goes back to "free service, needs to pay the bills". No different than Geekzone and subscribers really.

I assumed the interest on my Skype credit would pay the bills ; ). But my skype credit had become inactive. Now that is fixed hopefully that will remove ads.

Before posting I searched for 'remove Skype ads' and got only results for a lot of hacks and cludges. Microsoft needs some advertising spend on those keywords. +Some kind of text on the in app advertising indicating that credit will remove it would also be helpful.
