Totally unrelated to Windows 10 upgrades, wait actually it is...

I have a Windows 8.1 x86 device that I want to upgrade to 10. The recovery partition is one of those compressed WIMboot things. Im trying to get a copy of the drivers that ship with the recovery image before I upgrade to 10 - the upgrade advisory said I wouldn't be able to restore to the original recovery image post 10 upgrade.

I've managed to extract install.wim from the recovery partition but because its a WIMboot file imagex wont recognise it.

I've also run the built in Windows "create recovery media" and I get spanned WIM files (ie install.swm1, install.swm2, install.swm3) on the USB drive. These are also not readable by imagex.

Ive checked my imagex against another image.wim file and it works fine so I suspect its becuase these are WIMboot based.

So, are there any options to get files out of a WIMboot WIM file?

You can use the Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) tool to mount a Windows image from a WIM

why not just upgrade?

Thanks Nathan. I will be upgrading ASAP but just want to be sure I can recover the drivers if required.

There were reports with the Windows 10 tech preview on the device that some of the drivers didn't get loaded, couldn't be found on windows update etc - specifically the Kionix G-Sensor.

you should be good with the recovery USB key you made, as at least you can get back to OEM partition then

Nathan, OMG thank you so much, DISM did the job!

Used this command;

Dism /Mount-Image /ImageFile:V:\fullwim\Install.wim /index:1 /MountDir:C:\test\offline

Mounted perfectly and I can get what I need. I should know better than spend 2 days googling and shouldve come straight here!

Thanks again Nathan!
