So windows 10 downloaded itself when i did a windows update on my machine.

I dont want to install it right now, or until i finish uni this semester so i dont get stuck with out a device should something go wrong.

The problem is i can only delay the install by 2 days according to the Get windows 10 box, and when i look at the shutdown and restart buttons i see they have update, and restart and update and shutdown.

I really dont want to do this right now.

What can i do?

didnt have a choice and it upgraded me to win10, few things didnt work like touch pad, and bluetooth mouse so downgraded back to 8.1.

Removed the above KB and hid the 2 updates for now.

What a PITA

It sounds like you clicked reserve then didn't unreserve before it installed

Or is the problem you unreserved but it still installed?

Have you tried selecting Windows Update in Control Panel, then selecting "Available Updates"? You might then be able to deselect Windows 10. I was able to do that (after unreserving Windows 10, but not sure whether that anything to do with it.) The Windows 10 update ~4GB still shows as pre-selected whenever I check again but provided I deselect it, it shows no signs of actually installing automatically.

You might also then change your update options to not be "Automatic" install.

I have my options set to notify only and not install updates automatically, and today I received the message to say Windows 10 was available to download. I clicked on "Schedule your installation" and I then got a message stating that Windows 10 was already downloading. I had to go into Windows Update to cancel the download.

I'm making a disc image of my system tonight before installing W10

In "Windows Update" if you right-click on an update you don't want to install and select 'hide', you shouldn't be bothered by it again. You can restore hidden updates any time you're ready. If the Windows 10 update is like any other update this should work fine. Not reserved it on any of my machines so haven't tried it.

i was under the impression that you reserved you copy then you could install it at your leisure.

by default its selected in windows update, and unless your paying attention its quiet easy to download it. once its downloaded your screwed when it comes to windows updates

I had to uninstall the KB then restart then i was able to hide both the KB and the win10 upgrade in windows upgrade. Thats sorted it for now.

Will upgrade once i finish uni on my own terms.

Right so back to this again, i uninstalled and disabled the KB and the windows 10 download.

ive just done a did another windows update and neither of the 2 above were in it, but it still wants to install windows 10 on completion, im guessing because of the previously downloaded instillation files.

how do you delete those files so this stops happening?

As awesome as windows 10 is, MS needs a boot up the arse for the upgrade installer. I believe I downloaded the 3GB upgrade 2 or 3 times on my surface, because every time I cancelled the install it dumped the files. The same thing has happened on another machine.
When you're on a poor connection, this kind of thing is unacceptable.

Seems to me MS are transferring a lot of data for nothing.

so far, everytime I looked into reports of the installer downloading the files over and over again, it actually wasn't. The UI says downloading but its pulling the files in from your local cache.

If you deleted all those files locally, then yes it would have to download them.
