I've discovered a few hardware driver issues since updating to 10. I like the interface, so will try updating without driver updates ... Hmm ... Not sure if a good idea or not

used a win 8.1 bootable USB to restore the image i had before i went to 10.

i have to say that 8.1 now feels faster than 10. (which means performance wise there is no difference, as suggested by benchmarks on the net)

if only it had 10's interface ...

Upgraded yesterday - normally I do a clean, so was a bit of a gamble for me - and it is all running fine.

Performance snappy, all apps and HW working well, so don't see myself needing to go back to 8.1 at this stage.

Liking the interface.

thing is, a good OS should migrate everything without need for clean install. i think.

and i think 10 does a very good job of migrating my 8.1 stuff. loads of stuff. every single one worked. surprisingly. except for one which had already an update to download which then worked.

but the USB port(?s), sound, SD card reader had issues. i can live with that, maybe.

consider myself lucky i guess.

I can't believe the level of testing and checking is so poor that it allows this sort of thing to happen

I was wondering if you do an upgrade to windows 10, and then decide to revert back to windows 8 within the month, does that remove the ability to upgrade to windows 10  for free later on after the 1st year is up?  Or can you do a clean install of windows 10, say in 18 months, and it will recogise that the PC has been updated previously and will allow the free windows 10 install.

once you're activated you "should" be fine.

but the way that 10 is doing, no doubt there will be one or two here and there that are unable to activate their 10 after the 12 months despite having it activated in the first 12 months.

Just rewound my wife's laptop back to Windows 8.1; it was crashing A LOT on Windows 10, and then the "start" menu simply stopped working.  If you Google this, you'll find lots of Windows 10 users complaining about start menu not working after upgrading.

Apparently a fix is being worked on, but without a working Start Menu, the computer is basically a paperweight for her (she's non technical).

So, back to 8.1 it goes for now.

I reverted back to Windows 7. Luckily I did backup with Acronis True Image before upgrade, so I just recovered whole partition from backup.

Reasons for revert: Brightness control didn't work (only 40% brightness after sleep mode). Touchpad didn't work, Virtual Box didn't work with host-only network (and I need it for work). And the most funny thing: periodically keypad (right side of keyboard) glitched: I had to push button like 20 times to get effect. That was really weird. So, yeah, Windows 10 is too raw for now.

I have found there are too many issues with upgrading, especially from windows 7 including lots of permission problems, which was to do with upgrading from a normal account to a microsoft account. I thought I had fixed them all, and followed all teh advice on the various forums. but as soon as they relogged in again the problems came back, and the permission had reset back..My solution was to setup the person on a new user account, and it has fixed all the problems.

I took the same precaution, but found that it wasn't necessary.

Settings > Update & Security > Recovery > Go back to Windows 7

"This option is only available for a month after you upgrade to Windows 10"

Having upgraded 10 x PCs from Windows 7 to Windows 10 - without any significant problems - I decided to take my HTPC back to Windows 7 so that I could still use the Media Centre.

The "Go back" option worked perfectly and took about 5 minutes. smile

Yeah, I also saw this option, but I'm concerned about all the rubbish windows tend to leave after any significant process :) I have 256Gb SSD therefor space is valuable.

BTW  did you check your free space before and after reverting? Is it changed?

I would have thought it was safer to restore from an images. Also you are not sending a request to microsoft that you are chosing to revert back, just incase you run into potential problems upgrading in the future after the 1 year free upgrade is up. I haven't read all the pages of terms in detail, who does, but there maybe something in the fine print which says the reverting back means you have declined the free upgrade.

I have a 60 GB system SSD.
After a Disk Clean I have exactly the same free space as before the upgrade.
Windows is already inviting me to upgrade (again)  smile

I would like to go back, but am frankly afraid to. After my upgrade experience, I don't trust Windows not to make a mess of it. At the moment it is not quite bad enough to be worth he trouble, but that may change.
