Hi, I installed W10 and used it for awhile and decided to go back to W8.1. The retro went fine but now when I go to the action centre and try to download the latest updates for 8.1 W10 keeps trying to download again. How do I stop this? I've tried downloading each update individually to see if one of them is the trigger but W10 tries to go first every time.

i suspect not many people have gone back to win 8 and won't be able to help you.

there would be an option in windows update to not download certain (ie w 10) updates?

you need to uninstall the KB (KB3035583) that showed the little icon on the taskbar, you then need to hide the KB and the windows 10 download in windows update.

run disc cleanup as admin and delete the windows install files, will be about 3-5gb.

restart

try a windows update again

you shouldnt have the little icon, and the windows 10 update shouldnt show in windows update.

there may also be a couple of folders on c drive. $windows ~bt and cant remember what the other one was

ive been through this and it was a PITA, microsoft could have made it easier if you wanted to roll back.

and that doesnt work with out other steps.

Thanks for that. I'd already done all you've suggested except deleting the files on my c drive. I can't seem to find the ones you write about, any more info on the wee suckers would be much appreciated.

so you have done the disc cleanup?

and you can see 1 or 2 folders called $windows ~xx ?

I've done the disc cleanup but can't find any folders with that name and I also just tried the windows update again and even though W10 wasn't showing as soon as I went to download the available updates W10 started downloading!
Where exactly will those $Windows~xx files likely be?

was there about 3-5gb of files to be deleted in disc cleanup? run as admin?
did you select cleanup system files at the bottom left of the cleanup window?

Yes I deleted W10 in disc clean up 2.7 gb give or take and yes did a system clean as well. I'm just missing those pesky files on my c drive. Could they be called something else? Would they be in the windows folder on my c drive or in the windows older on my program files??
This is driving me nuts. Thanks for your help by the way.

na definitely in the root of C drive, they were hidden so you might have to show them.

you dont have to delete those files on C drive, some are just the backup files made of win 8.1 when you upgrade to 10. shouldnt impact with windows update

have you unstalled the KB update? you dont have the little 10 upgrade icon in the task bar?

the other folder that i deleted, pretty sure it was the backup of windows 8.1 that was created when you upgrade to 10, so that it can roll back. it doesnt impact the whole windows update issue though.

i went back due to things not working (i didnt want to upgrade yet in the first place but MS were sneeky) and not having time to f round fixing things, due to being at uni

also need lots of little issues people have been having and hopefully by December things are a little more mature

Forget the "other" folder, I'm still trying to find the first one. I've changed the folders view setting to show hidden folders and I still can't find the them.

it probably disappeared when you did the disc cleanup :)

i saw them both before i did the cleanup
