So, I happen to have an older Sony Vaio that I intended to run Windows 10 on.

Downloaded the installer, setup to install but then paused it and checked the Sony website.... which said wait till we get drivers out.

Turns out because it has a hybrid graphics chip (Intel/AMD)... there will be no windows 10 update.

Frustrating but I get. So I have removed KB3035583 (which is the updater from Microsoft).... but I still get the message 'machine is ready to upgrade'.

I have hacked out many references to GWX in the registry... still get message.

Thoughts?

I can't get the update.

Another thought....have you tried getting the usb media creation tool (which downloads the ISO) and try an upgrade that way?

I had a W7 VM which wouldn't upgrade because the vmware svga adapter wasn't supported - upgraded fine via iso.

I just had a quick read, that is quite a horrible KB article.
There should just be a big gray button in the control panel "Hide new OS notifications"

I agree that there should be an easier way to do it but I would much rather have KB articles that list all available info rather than the new Win 10 cumulative patch ones like this that just say "This update includes improvements to enhance the functionality of Windows 10."

When you are trying to troubleshoot problems the more info you have the better.

As per OP, Sony didn't recommend the update - not windows that didn't allow the update.

Put 10 on my cousins HP with hybrid graphics.

Premiere pro CC started crashing on startup. No graphics driver update for the intel half of the hybrid. Turning hybrid off in the bios so that it was all on the intel graphics and premier would open, but the computer was unusable for any games etc.

In the end found a solution that was to rename the premierepro executable to something else, then the catylist control center would let you assign it to the proper graphics and it was happy. With its default filename there is a lock icon beside it in the list and its fixed on the intel graphics option.

Other than that, everything else seems fine on the intel/amd hybrid setup. No idea what will happen when CC updates next, probably just drop a new exe in the folder and he will keep on using the old one by the shortcut to the renamed version. Will see what happens when it does update next.

Sounds good.

In the end for me I reverted using system restore - very good tool that - and am now in the process of downloading 3 months worth of updates.

A nice update to this thread

So, for the last few months since the Windows 10 update came out, I have been dutifully hiding the update and trying to avoid installation (in Windows Updates).

This was because Sony had declared that installing the update on this particular cheap Sony Vaio I have would cause fatal errors.

The Windows 10 offer refused to go away. Despite registry hacks, uninstallation of the update, setting windows update to manual.... the blinkin thing just would not go away. I never really trusted Sony's assertion that the update would cause death, but I felt nervous just ignoring the instruction and blindly installing.

Anyway... I've had a few clear days at home with the holidays and decided to try creating Win10 as a dual-boot image... to see what would happen. If it failed, no harm done as I still had Windows 7 on the machine.

It worked. Remarkably well too. Of course I couldn't activate the Win10 image as it wasnt an overwrite, but it proved that the install worked fine and that the machine would not catch fire.

I have thus applied the update over the top of the Windows 7 install - and it's worked really well too. Nearly all the proprietary Sony control software works fine (I can't set screen brightness using FN+F5 anymore), but that doesnt matter. Everything else I've run on this machine now works well. I've removed most of Sony's 'extra helper' software, since they sold and abandoned the Vaio line, and the system is nice and quick.

Gives me a little more time with this machine and does not force a new hardware purchase - it's 3 years old and the battery is failing rapidly as with most windows laptops - but this was a nice start to 2016...

Time to get Raspberry pi going proper now...
