Racking my brain here on how to resolve this one. Running Vista Home Premium. When trying to run a page with Java, I get told my version is out-of-date. I have 7.71 and the newest one is 8.60.

Problem is, I can't update my version of Java. The old one - despite being uninstalled - is still (somehow) present on my system, and it won't go. Double-clicking the installer for the new version gives the hourglass for a second, then it disappears. Java doesn't appear in Programs and Features in the Control Panel, and the MS Fixit tool can't find it to remove it either. Restarted several times with no change - I still get told on the "Verify Java version" page that I have 7.71 and I need to upgrade to 8.60.

I just want to get rid of 7 entirely so I can run the 8 installer and update my Java.

Any suggestions/pointers?

Are you using the stand-alone installer as opposed to the web one?

Try using Javara and/or Revo Uninstaller

I think I'll just use that updater in the future.

Java in a browser, really, in 2015? I thought that was dead. Java is huge on the server, but in the browser, wow.

errr I wouldnt trust that site, and would suggest avoiding it.

Any webpage requiring java I would personally stay away from.

yeah I wouldnt use it. well I wouldnt use that tool from their website.

if it is for GFX drivers

open Nvidia control panel and find the driver version in there

then visit nvidia's site and manually search for the driver, and compare numbers

There are plenty of govt websites still using it. ANZ Direct Link still use it (dropping it soon apprently). Java is unfortunately alive and well.
