Hi There,

I have 2 servers and one is running as the primary domain controller, that has set up and been configured as a domain controller buttttt....

The second server wont join the domain as a domain controller, I run the active directory set-up and the error that i get while processing it at the very last step is :

Active Directory Installation Wizard

The operation failed because:

Active Directory could not create the NTDS Settings objects for this domain controller... Ensure the provided networks credentials have sufficient permissions.

"The RPC Server is unavailable"

Any help is much apreciated! thanks!

I have had those RPC Servere not available problem and it was  the remote desktop connectivity playing..are you connecting remotely? Did you do a restart (well, yes) of that remote server?

And, are you trying to join this as a Backup domain controller or ?? There can only be on PDC in a network

It is as a secondary domain controlelr so to speak. They are both giving everyone user files and data.

I am doing it localy as i find that when installing roles you can have problems with the server not acting as it should.

Thanks!

all that I have on both of the servers is windows fiewall, on the first server windows firewall is disabled because of the service "windows firewall/internet sharing service" is stopped, the computer told me to stop it so i did, to get the first server onto the domain.

on the second server I have turned Windows Firewall Off for the time being.

Otherwise there is nothing else on these servers,

I have done all optional and important updates. and they both have the latest possible drivers.

Does it ask you to authenticate when trying to join it, and if so, what account? Admin on the PDC?

Hi there,

It does ask to authenticate on the pdc, and if you enter the incorrect details it will not continue with the installation.

The authentication ibncludes username which is the administrator account, the password, and also the domain, all entered manually, and using the netbios domain.

Okay, can you advise the OS's on both servers, are they virtual servers at all? Secondly is the time correct on both?

The logs that the wizards make may be of some use:

Whenever you encounter errors running the Active Directory Installation Wizard (Dcpromo.exe), examine the Dcpromoxx.log files. These files (Dcpromo.log and Dcpromoui.log) are located in the % SystemRoot %\debug folder

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/windows2000serv/reskit/distrib/dsbi_add_fvhd.mspx?mfr=true

Its a Server 2K page but from memory they didnt change much in 2K3.

Is the account you are using to add the machine a member of the enterprise admins?

You can try running dcdiag and netdiag on your current domain controler and make sure all is well there.

I believe it is, will check for sure later.

It is the Administrator account that comes loaded on when server 2003 enterprise edition is installed, so I believe it should be a member of the "enterprise Admins"
