Hi

I keep getting this message when ever my laptop starts up

SMART Failure Predicted on hard disk: 2 ST96812AS - (S1)

WARNING: immediately back up up your data and replace
your hard disk driver. A failure may be imminent.

Press F1 to Continue

I tried to back-up my whole laptop but near the end I got a bad sector error. I managed to backup all my docs though with no errors.
Should I be replacing my hhd or can I continue using this one?

Also I dont know if this is related but when i open up Internet explorer 7 and type something  like google.com it takes like 5-10 min to load the page up, it loads the title after 1-2 secs but the rest takes 5-10 min to show up (if it shows up at all) I have tried using 3 different Internet connections and no difference ,while my other laptops have no problem with the same Internet connections.

I have scanned with Spybot Search & Destroy - no results.

Some Specs of the laptop:
OS: XP Home
RAM: 512MB
CPU: 1.86GHz

A/V: AVG Free
Manufacture: HP

Alot of Hardware has something built into it now days that will predict if a component is going to die before it does so you can backup your data before hand.

First time I have run into it on a laptop, have only seen it on a server so far.

It would be best if the laptop is still under warrenty to contact HP and get the drive replaced.
If the laptop is not under warrenty, you might find the drive still is but you will have to find out the make and model and contact the suppliers.

HP warrenty check site

Is the laptop making strange clicking or grinding noises?

I would bet money that the drive will infact fail soon. If you need to keep using it make sure the data is backed up (and that the data thats backed up is readable!)

No its not making any weird noises its just giving me the message when it starts up and when I try to back up the whole hhd it tells me that the operation cannot be completed because of bad sectors. I still have warranty, so I will return it to the shop today and get the hhd replaced.

mme, just make sure you backup any data that you want to keep as HP will just put a factory image on the drive when they replace it.

I have only been able to backup my docs not my programs. So I will just have to re-install my programs and such?

Yes, and this is always a good idea because when you install a program there is a lot of behind the scenes cofiguration required that is much more than simply copying the program files.
