MS abandoned porting Android apps to Windows, but this move aims to make windows a first class citizen for mobile development rather than an also ran.

This announcement came a month  or two faster than I expected. It really does make multiplatform .NET a realistic option for small developers.

I'm part of a volunteer team developing a multiplatform app for a charity. We started with a Universal Windows Platform (UWP) app prototype but the interface is too much work without the feature-set that Xamarin provides.

The free Visual Studio Community 2015 version has always had Xamarin included.

There are some limitations on using/deploying the free license.

But, AFAIK, it is the full version.

Had a play with this yesterday and it didn't work (told me that the app was larger than 131072 bytes and therefore needed a business licence). Of course, all the Google hits are from back when you had to pay for it... hopefully there will be more details next week.

Visual Studio 2015 Update 2 has just been released too so you may need to update to this to get the full Xamarin

Yep, I have Update 2; that's how I installed Xamarin.
