Woke up this morning to find my pc had updated itself overnight.

I wasnt expecting that. No warnings.

Anyway, just like last time, I can no longer access shared folders on my server.

Also it bizarrely says in the bottom right corner :

"Windows 10 Insider Preview - Evaluation copy. Build 14295.rs1_release.160318-1628"

In winver is says "Evaluation copy. Expires 16/7/2016"

Have I lost my free licence?

Bad Microsoft. Any major updates like this really should wait for user approval before installing.

Are you in the preview program?

Did you run the windows preview before the release of windows 10?

I am on the slow ring. But I am still annoyed that updates install without warning, or approval.

Its fortunate I dont have much to do today, because I'm probably going to have to rollback or restore from backup before the day is out.

Thats what I had to do last time after spending way too long with MS support trying to fix the network access problem.

IF I dont, what happens after the expiry date 16/7?

If you don't like the preview updates etc then get out of the preview builds and let other people have the issues :P

You can then use the "defer upgrades" setting and set it to tell you that it needs to reboot etc

you can roll back right from inside the Windows Update UI

If you don't want to receive Windows Insider flights then you shouldn't be in the Windows Insider Preview program

after 16/7 your eval license expires

@nathan please dont state the bleeding obvious to me.

Of course the licence expires, but what happens to the computer when that happens?

What are the ramifications? Does it revert back to a properly licensed pc like it was before, does it explode in a shower of spectacular fireworks, or something else?

I also tried opting out the builds but I'm having trouble doing that.

When I opted out which was easy I already had a W10 licence, I simply did a non destructive refresh of my PC and I had an activated full W10 build

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

Approximately 2 weeks before a build’s license expires, you will start getting warnings that this build will expire and that you should update to the most recent build.

When the build reaches the license expiration date, the system will automatically reboot every three hours

Windows will stop booting - in the case of 14295 this is on 1 August

At the risk of stating the bleeding obvious, I would not recommend running insider builds/previews on production/everyday/personal machines you rely on.

I dont rely on it, even though its my primary pc, its not my only one. And its why I'm on the slow ring rather than the fast one.

But I know from last time, that if too much time passes between updating and rolling back, other problems can occur.

So I'll have to do this sooner rather than later.

What is the most recent build? I dont mean what number, but would it be a build ahead or behind what I've got at the moment?

Does opting out only work if you are NOT running an Eval copy?

Here is what happens when I try opting out at the moment.

I click STOP INSIDER PREVIEW BUILDS

Then STOP RECEIVING INSIDER PREVIEW BUILDS

Which gives me this

Which takes me to a webpage saying

So I'm in a bit of a loop I think.

Sorry if I'm being a bit thick here.

I used the Media Creation Tool today to download a new image. What version would that be, as I dont recall it saying that at any point?
