Windows 10, for those who love it, was about getting your cloud / online presence integration smoother (amongst other things). It was also about integrated search features and clever helpfulness.

Unfortunately it seems a lot of users are having to undo basic functionality they have had since Windows 7.

My issue - high disk usage making simple jobs impossible to work with, 11 minute startups, sitting for 5 -1 0 minutes waiting for the system to become responsive (even task manager taking 60-90 seconds to respond often).

Two major issues have been found that cause this for many people.

  • 1 - Dropbox - which ironically is now being pushed by MS in some of its advertising. Turn it off and see what it does to the "system and compressed memory" task usage re disk access and memory usage. (to be fair, Cubby, google Drive etc are also possible culprits).
  • 2 - Follow Microsoft's instructions below to disable Superfetch, Search, and notifications (seriously - notifications, search and super fetch - are officially being turned off to make Windows 10 work correctly).
  • Lastly - I've turned off windows Defender using an app ( NoDefender ) that removes and disables it. made a huge difference to me. If you don't want to completely disable it add c:\ to your exclusions list, which will still allow scanning of incoming network traffic but not saved files.

I'm hoping this resolves my issues, but if it doesn't I'll turn off all network apps and as many services as possible until I uncover the source of the problem.

MS's Offical Help (Vian MS support engineer) says:

http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_10-performance/system-and-compressed-memory-high-disk-usage/a2a6169a-426e-4e6b-88fe-5ec0e9362be9

The issue with "System and Compressed memory" is rather a common issue that many of our users face. Please do follow the below steps to troubleshoot.

Step 1: Update all the drivers.

Please update all the drivers in Windows 10 computer and check if it works. You can do that by,

1. Press Windows key + X key and select the Device Manager.

2. Select all the drivers one by one and right click it and select "Update driver software..." and check if the issue persists.

if the issue persists, please go for the below step.

Step 2: Turn off the "Show me tips about Windows"

Please do the below steps to do the same.

1. Press Windows key + I key and open the settings.

2. In the settings, select the System>Notifications and actions> turn off the  "Show me tips about Windows".

3. Restart the computer.

If still the issue persists, please follow the below step.

Step 3: Modify the registry.

Please follow the below steps to troubleshoot. (Read disclaimer before proceeding)

1. Open Notepad and type the following.

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\TimeBroker]

"Start"=dword:00000003

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\SysMain]

"DisplayName"="Superfetch"

"Start"=dword:00000003

2. Save with extension *.reg ( example solution.reg)

3. Double click the file and merge it.

4. Restart the PC

DISCLAIMER:  Important this section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. Also, please back up your data for avoiding any data loss. For more information about how to back up and restore the registry, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft

Did those steps resolve your particular issue?

how do you know you don't have a faulty drive?

I had similar sluggish performance issues on a 4GB RAM/5400rpm HDD system and have found disabling the RunFullMemoryDiagnostic task under Microsoft\Windows\MemoryDiagnostic in Task Scheduler has made a big difference. Supposedly this (in part) disables the new memory compression feature in Windows 10.

Solely empirical, but now when I close and exit say 50 tabs in Chrome browser (i.e gigabytes of virtual memory) there is no longer 1-2 minutes of disk activity while the "System and Compressed memory" winds down in process memory.

I would disable Superfetch and Prefetch if you have a SSD but wouldn't disable Defender.

Are you sure your drive is working ok? If this is a SSD have you done a TRIM lately (elevated command promp DEFRAG C: /L)?

I don't want to hi-hack the thread or anything but over the last few days I have had issues with my Win 8.1 machines drive. Its one of the 2TB storage drives (not the SSD).

The drive is usually pretty good, I checked defragmenter and its up to date. Its just that every so often it hits 100% disk usage. This tends to last for about 5-10 minutes then it dissappears. I have absolutely no idea why. Have done all sorts of disk checks and there are no errors that I have been able to find.  Its really really annoying I cant watch a video or copy files to it without it freezing up and causing all sorts of problems. It might be faulty hardware or on the way out. But I have got no clue what the problem is. I have played around with so many settings and still have this problem.

No idea. Start with sysinternals and see what is pegging the disk use. If it is a core windows item then it can be difficult to go deeper but it could eliminate anything obvious.

https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/processexplorer.aspx

^there is a column enable for disk use iirc.

The superfetch disable posted by nuns also applies to Windows 8. Restart after making any windows change and revert change if it makes no difference.

Task manager -> performance -> disk

Sort processes by total disk usage and wait till the drive goes nuts again.

My system boots to the login screen in no time at all (SSD), but found that the actual login process was slow. Found a post on another forum about similar issue, and the user disabled Skype. So I tried this, and its made a huge difference to login times.  YMMV.

Yeh I am about 90% sure this is a disk on the 'way out'. when i try to copy files its only some files that are corrupt, and it happens at the same % of the way through where the disk goes crazy and eventually it tells me it cant copy it.

I don't really want to spend $ on it right now, but I don't think I have a choice. I will copy off what I want/can.

That sounds like a dying disk alright.  Stop writing anything more and get your most important data off there ASAP... if you still can

I do suppose you've run check disk with the /F and /R switches

Not a bad price at all. Its my main fileserver pc/multimedia box. It wouldn't be a disaster for me if I lose it. Speccy says the drive has no errors I beg to differ.
