I'm trying to troubleshoot a sudden CPU @ 100% scenario and was wondering what other GZs approach to optional updates is?

Accept or reject? Or research each update?

Maybe we should discuss the 100% issue instead.

If you have an image for the machine you can apply all optionals and see if that resolves the issue. Roll back if it does not. If fixed then rollback and repeat by 50% until you pinpoint the fix.

There are some third party services with a better presentation of update content. Microsoft presentation and search of update content has always been terrible.

Is there any aspect of the issue that indicates it could be resolved with an optional update?

I first wrote a long "100% cpu" post then accidently closed the tab :(

Basically I'm getting 50% cpu usage from an instance of javaw.exe specifically tied to Dynamix ups software netguard 2.14.

I'm trying to apply all windows 7 updates in case there is an issue with Java runtime enviroment that can be fixed by updates.

Have you updated to the newest Java runtimes (and removed the old ones)? Best to remove all the old ones first, then download the newest one.

Can the UPS interact with windows without the software (ie. does Win7 see it as a battery/power device in Device Manager? Use Win 7's power management applet to control/set alerts etc.). The UPS's we have at work (Little Belkin ones and big Dell/Eaton ones) just connect via USB and need no further drivers or software.

Don't update with all the optional updates or you will likely cause yourself problems by increasing the dependencies you have. Many of the optional updates are fixes for unusual problems so if you don't have the specific problem than I wouldn't update. I do take optional device driver updates.

There are a couple of optionals that fix issues with svchost.exe taking up heaps of memory (causing the computer to run really slow). They are related to Windows Update processes (wupdate.exe). You could check the descriptions for them.

The powershield Facebook page might respond to a well written post. Draft and save in wordpad ; ).

A Windows Update cannot fix a JRE. You need to fix the JRE or uninstall it

Is this a virtual or physical machine?

gzt: Is this a virtual or physical machine?

Physical machine. Win 7 Pro. E8400 CPU 2.66 with 4gb ram. Used as a media server with 4XHDD.

Never had any issues until recently. Plex media server now cannot even stream a single SD video let alone multiple full HD streams (which it was coping with fine in the past).

Running plex server, logitech media server, teamviewer, dropbox, google photos, dynamix UPS software and comodo antivirus/firewall.

BTW dynamix UPS software is not new either, has been running on the machine for 6-8 months with no issues until 2 weeks ago.

Java noob question. Is its possible for a java app to run without JRE? Looked to unstall JRE before installing the latest version and couldn't find any previous java install - or at least nothing to uninstall.

Many applications install their own JRE. Is there a Java item in control panel for this one?

Maybe stop or uninstall your AV temporarily if you feel comfortable with that, just to make sure it is not some simple resource/file contention issue related to AV.

I actually discovered there is no JRE installed in this PC. The UPS software has it's own java executable.

I'm trying to find some generic UPS software.

I'd prefer the dynamix software as it is very good and you change parameters for shut downs etc. Surely I can get it to work in the way it was flawlessly running 2 weeks ago.

No there is not. The javaw.exe is running in Java Platform SE binary if that is of any use.
