*sigh*

Have a HP ZBook for review (beautiful machine, superfast Intel Core i7). It came with Windows 7 Pro installed so decided to upgrade to Windows 10 as offered. The upgrade was super quick and all drivers worked with small updates - even the fingerprint scanner.

This was last night. This morning installed the monthly Windows Update. Plugged a HP Port Replicator. And then this:

The mug in the background is most appropriate at this time.

I'm sure you would have, but have you unplugged the port replicator? It's got a USB mass storage device the laptop could conceivably be trying to boot from.

sigh..
I dont know why HP STILL continue to give USB(etc) higher boot priority over HD . Even on HP servers .
What are they thinking . I know, no one ever leaves a USB HD plugged in when restarting or after a power cut , do they

Servers, yes to a degree, some people boot their ESX from USB internally - but for desktop/laptop, no is annoying and leads to support calls such as MF's ;)

I contacted HP support about this issue years ago for some pro books that did this. Couldn't power on a laptop after docking to a replicator that had a USB drive attached. Bios update and multiple calls later ("I see you lodged a ticket last week ... How did that go?" ... "I see we made a follow up call last week ... How did that go?" ... "So how did the follow up call to the follow up call go?") and all was sorted.

Shame they still have similar issues.

Issue was easily sorted by removing USB from the boot list in my case.

This is annoying but also it seems unusual. Does it mean the drive was partially bootable? Had some bootcode left over from an OS install but no os?

The 'Missing operating system" message is from the BIOS not the OS boot loader. As long as a USB flash drive is formatted it is considered bootable.

Problem solving steps for my Mum, you may find these useful ;)

  • Is it plugged in?
  • Is EVERYTHING plugged in, to the right place?
  • Are you sure it's plugged in?
  • Is the power on to the house? What if you plug something else into the socket the computer uses?
  • What lights are on?
  • Did you plug anything new in?
  • Did you install any new software, or run any updates?

etc

Went round to a friend's place a week ago as his printer had just stopped printing. Everything looked OK so was a bit puzzled. Decided to try another USB port and found the printer was plugged into the RJ45 socket!!
