I was an insider but a few months ago opted out.

My PC is still running Eval copy Build 14295.rs1.

Now is tells me it is going to expire on the 15th.

Can I get back on a "normal" build by using the Media Creation Tool even though that is using build 10586.420?

Or can you not go backwards with builds?

i have the same issue but with 14361 on my surface pro but haven't even opted out. the update to 14379 shows in when i check for updates, but keeps getting stuck at 61% when preparing to install.

I would suggest downloading the 14372 build ISO and doing an upgrade from a USB with that. That should then update to 14379.

As for going back to the 1511 release, pretty sure you need to do a fresh install with a genuine license. That or just opt in to the slow ring again and get 14372 :)

Can you just stay on the slow ring indefinitely?

So you will always have an eval license, and after July 29 you will have to pay if you want to revert to a production build, even though you had a legitimate Win7/8 license to begin with?

It doesn't quite work like that as far as I can tell. You get the full release build when it comes out (should be sometime in the next few weeks) and can then opt out and then stay with that build which won't expire (based on what happened this time last year). It will be updated normally and you will be set.

If you stay on the slow ring you will eventually get a build of whatever release they do next (Redstone 2)  and will have to keep getting slow ring builds until that releases as interim builds will always have expiry dates. The cycle will then continue after the final release of that build.

Sorry, but I find that a bit confusing.

Turns out I had not opted out, I have been on the slow ring for some time. I got the 14372 build last night.

I remember now trying to opt out several months ago but the process kept failing and I gave up.

If I manage to opt out now, will I stay on 14372 until the production builds catch up?

The Anniversary update is releasing on August 2nd. Sometime shortly before that the final build for that release will be pushed out to people on the Fast and Slow rings. If you opt out once you get that build then you should have a licenced copy for the lifetime of the machine that will be just like a bought one.

Make sense?

Yes, thank you.

I appreciate your persistence.

Just saw on the feedback hub about the 14383 release (fast ring).  On the known issues area it mentions:

If you are seeing a notification pop-up once a day that started on 7/1 saying that your Windows evaluation copy expires on 7/15/2016, don’t worry – this is a superfluous dialog and your OS won’t expire.  The dialog will also go away soon.

I'm still on the slow ring and just got an update this evening.

Now I am version 1607 Build 14388.0

And it doesn't say eval version or anything in the bottom right corner.

They removed the watermark a few builds ago. The final version that will be going out to everybody is still not out yet though :) Fast ring got 14390 today. Won't be too long now though.
