I've used Microsoft Outlook in various workplaces for as long as I can remember. And for at least three decades I have also kept a personal calendar, initially using paper diaries/planners, then pieces of hardware (Sharp IQ series organisers, an IBM WorkPad, and various mobile phone calendars) until using Google Calendar on an Android phone for the last four years.

Recently I've been using MS Office applications more at home. I have an Office 365 subscription and have all the apps, including Outlook, on a Windows notebook and on my phone. This got me thinking it would be good if I could synch things between the two calendars, so I can see everything in one place (as I can see my GMail inbox in Outlook).

Google Calendar used to have synch functionality for Outlook, but it seems they dropped it a couple of years ago. There is an option in Outlook 2016 to open a calendar "From Internet..." but I haven't been able to make this open my Google Calendar. And this got me thinking some more...

Is it worth trying to synch calendars in two systems? If I want to do this it looks like I'll need a third party app. But perhaps the best solution is not bother with maintaining two systems to do one job. Drop Google calendar and just use Outlook. I'd be interested in what other people are doing.

You can do it and have it sync your google calendar however its  read only and you cannot change stuff in outlook and have it change googles calendar. Not with just importing the google calendar in anyway. There is third party software out there that will do the full functionality however these cost.

I used to have it set up on mine but found it just as easy to have my web browser open on my calendar at work and do everything through there and get alerts to my phone via the calendar.

I spent quite some time trying to do this and eventually gave up in disgust. It's possible to download your existing gmail calendar to outlook and then maintain it there, but it won't sync back to gmail.

The easiest way to keep two calendars in sync is via various mobile apps. By default, most if not all allow you to add both O365 and Google Calendars. I was using Sunrise.am until it recently closed (bought by Microsoft and now being integrated into Outlook Mobile), so have switched to the CM Android Calendar.

This is what I do.  I have an S4 running lollipop.  I use the Samsung calendar and connect it to my work exchange folder and my personal Google calendar.

Appointments for each calendar appear in a different colour.  If I make an appointment on the phone, then it updates into either calendar.

I don't bother combining the calendars in anyway on my desktop.  if I need to be

I sync my Google calender with Outlook on the desktop (up to Outlook 2016) with this product

http://www.fieldstonsoftware.com/software/gsyncit4/

It has a trial version that actually works fine in production but you have to click away a trial button :-(  Otherwise it's not expensive at US$20

Syncs both ways from Outlook to Gmail but I only use it to sync from Gmail to Outlook. So I enter all my meetings in Google Calendar and it syncs to Outlook fine.
