I have two almost identical Win 7 machines. Both have MS Office but each PC has different icons in the System Tray.

I want to edit the items - ie remove items to get rid of 'brtswnd' which is probably my Brother printer and MS Office Word which only appears on one machine and add items such as Defender and Windows Update, again these appear but only on one machine.

I have asked Auntie Google but she does not have the answer. I have seen references to "Trayit" but I don't think that is the answer.

Note - I am not referring to the task bar.

Is there an answer?

right click taskbar and select properties > notification > customise.

Thanks GZT but that is not what I want to do.

Sure in the customise/behaviours there are options but not the ability to remove entirely or add new items. I don't care about 'brtswnd' or 'MS Office Word' but I do care about 'Windows Update' and 'Defender'.

'never display' is close enough equivalent to 'remove'.

windows update notify may be partly controlled by the windows update options elsewhere.

I think in 7, defender updates is just part of windows update notification. but maybe check the defender options in case. (In 10 for sure has own tray icon)

If the application does not provide a tray icon there is nothing you can do about it.

Ok, thats me there are probably some better answers coming ; ).

Winupdate simply might not be working correctly . If its not finding any updates (or not working/not looking) you wont get the notification.
Check the Winupdate settings & history (to see when it last updated)

As for Windefender: pfft, if you are relying on that .......... :-)
