Is there a way to turn these checks off as some of the requirements are way up there.

I run 2008 Eval server no probs on my old Dell box but Home Server seems to be set on having to buy all new stuff, already had to import some more rambus RAM.

Okay looks like I have to rebuild the Dell PC to run Home Server, in the meantime got it running on my desktop under vmware and seems to work okay.

Just trying to work out storage as I thought you could add virtual drives and usage space on any PC attached to the network. This would be ideal for me for storing movies and music etc but not needing to go looking for them and remove any duplication.

However cannot find the whereabouts to set this up and HS DFS looks way weirder than std windows server setup.

Can this be done or is home server just a backup server (which I have to much crap to backup)?

What checks are you specifically talking about? Windows Home Server will actually install and run on a very modest set of requirements. The published minimum specs for a "build your own" install during Beta 2 were:

CPU: 1GHz Pentium 3 or better
RAM: 512MB minimum
Hard Drive:1 Hard Drive 80GB internal (IDE, ATA, SATA, or SCSI)
DVD drive that is bootable
Monitor for the installation
QWERTY Keyboard and mouse or a compatible pointing device. Also installation only.
Network Interface Card (NIC) 100Mbps Ethernet

Not sure if you'd get away with only a 80GB drive for an install now and to do get the best performance from the way WHS handles disk with its drive-extender technology, you should really have three disks configured to allow for folder duplication. Having said that, I've got mine paired back to a single 500GB drive because of the file corruption issue http://forums.microsoft.com/WindowsHomeServer/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=2979617&SiteID=50

My home-built WHS is running on a recycled Dell Poweredge 600SC, P4 1.8GHz, 1GB RAM (originally 512MB).

No you're on the wrong track there with your concept of virtual drives etc.

Have a look at some of the white papers at http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/windowshomeserver/support.mspx. Specifically the ones listed under Technical Briefs will give you a good feel for what is going on under the hood.

[EDIT]
Actually in rereading what you wrote Nasty-One, I suspect you are probably thinking about media sharing from other machines. If so, take a look at the following interesting post http://forums.microsoft.com/windowshomeserver/showpost.aspx?postid=1788565&siteid=50&sb=0&d=1&at=7&ft=11&tf=0&pageid=1

Sounds almost like a SAN :D

Any how will play around with it on vmware till I get it to where I can replace the Evalution 2008 server.

I just need to move the 160G drive to be primary by the looks and can always add external firewire drives

I still prefer DFS namespace I do one shared folder and add targets to all machines say for movies then I get no duplications and no searching around for which share its in. And I believe (guessing) that when inserting there is some logic as to where files are actually saved.

WHS has DFS just looks different and I am not that familiar with it.
