Hi guys.

Two nights ago I was prompted to install the Anniversary update. It got to about 85% of the install then the screen said it was restoring to a previous version of Windows. Once it's restored it back though, my taskbar isn't responding and I can't access the settings to see what the error code is.

I've tried installing the update a couple more times and I get the same result and still no taskbar working. Any help would be appreciated!

I'm thinking Windows key + E should get you a navigation window maybe that is a good place to start. See how you go.

Windows + X brought up a menu but I couldn't managed to get into the updates part. I could get to the installed updates in the control panel but it showed nothing, only updates from earlier in the month and before that.

Any other tips please?

Personally this is where I would start:

Check the log modified dates to make sure they are relevant to the update you performed.

When looking at the log contents it does pay to know what time you executed the upgrade.

You may have to read the last couple of pages in each log to get an overview of what was happening at the time. Feel free to pastebin those and link here.

Maybe boot safe mode or access the drive with another o/s.

Logs can be technical so this may not be an easy path for you.

Also, this path does not get your task bar working. It's just a step to determine why the update failed.

Try..

Disable / uninstall any 3rd party AV
Msconfig, disable non ms services , disable all startup items, look in scheduled tasks disable as required
Update Nvidia/ATI graphics drivers

Go to MS anniversary update download page (google) & run the update from there

The online update doesn't provide the error messages that you get when installing the update from media (e.g. DVD, USB).

Commonly, disabling the real-time protection of your antivirus will fix the problem.

For example, 91% through the update is often a second reboot error 0x8007002C which is commonly resolved by disabling your third-party antivirus.
