Some time ago, Nate asked the question of running WinXP on Win 7: http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?ForumId=50&TopicId=180588

Fast forward to now, and for the last few days I've been mulling running WinXP in an instance on my Win10 machine, for the simple reason that both the kids and I have games that absolutely will not work on Windows 10. I appreciate time moves on but it saddens me to think I have a loft full of games that won't run.

So I installed WinXP inside an instance of Virtualbox, but the hardware specs are a bit average and I'm not sure it will play any FPS games like COD (the original, not the lost in fanfiction space current varieties).

Aside from the speed and coaxing it back into life - I started with SP2 and have almost finished updating it - what do folks use for this sort of virtualisation?

What games are you trying to run that won't work? Will they not even work in Compatibility mode?

I havent come across any old games (and I have a lot that are going back before COD) that havent run under Win 10 - usually only thing I have to do is run the supplied DX Setup which seems to copy across any legacy DLL's required and away I go.

Getting back onto your question, my main concern would be video card support within a VM, regardless if its Vbox or VMware, you just wont get the same experience as a physical system, and that could hold you back.

Yeah get what you mean. The emulated card is only 128mb shared mem, which is a bit naff. I don't want yet ANOTHER machine just for games... I already have more than enough bits of kit

The Windows 7 Microsoft games run in Windows 10, but they will be deleted every time Win10 upgrades itself.

The Win 7 games only work with the hacked version. The original games off a Win 7 machine won't run at all. Imagine that. Windows can't even run its own games!

Edit: Also not in compatibility mode. I know. I tried.

I have a small pile of XP machines and I keep one of them on a separated network for the days I want to play old games on a decent-ish XP computer without emulation.

Is it possible to use Hyper-V which is built into windows 10, and enable the RemoteFX feature? Or does this not do the same thing?

Good ol school games, that don't require much thinking - just load em up and blast away :-).

I did try a virtual machine once, but the sound was real choppy - I think the SoundBlaster emulation was fighting for IRQ's / DMA.

Like @NedKelly, just easier to have a couple of XP machines dedicated to this ..
