So my wife's Surface Pro 3 was running Windows 10 after getting free upgrade from 8.1.

But I did a full factory reset on it as was getting bogged down and fastest way to clean it out and start again. But did not even think about operating system and now after reset its back on 8.1.

Am I now stuffed or can I get it back to Windows 10 without paying for it.

Once Win10 has been activated on a machine, it has the licence for the life of the machine.

You can upgrade it again and it will activate no problems.
You can even do a fresh install of a USB stick and it will activate.

I guess it will just download update itself at some stage automatically.
