Hi folks,

A friend of mine asked me if I know of any I can recommend. Not being a parent I have never actually looked into any of them. Having said that it feels to me like trying to jam a technological solution into a social problem - feels like a temporary measure.

Anyway, she wants  one so can anyone recommend any? Preferably free of course but I do understand that at times you get what you pay for.

Cheers,
Dany.

It all seems to have some suckage.

Would recommend the built in controls in any new Apple Mac, or failing that, the stuff built in to Vista.

No good free stuff.

Any commercial software solution will have an element of knowledge needed to stay one step ahead of savvy kids. (I.e. you block MSN, they use IRC, block IRC they use Java chat, block that, they email, block that.... you get the picture...)

Right...suckage...great term that one!

I don't think that comp runs Vista so I may recommend she gets a commercial one - Cyber Patrol and Net Nanny seem to be the top running ones. But yes, it's very much a gap stop measure, in a forever widening gap! I also suggested the kid's comp is set up in an easily supervised area - not sure if she'll take my advice on that one.

Have software that you can load onto your computer that redirects traffic via their proxy to filter. Cost is only $30 / yr. There is no customisation, so is quite restrictive, but better a little inconvienance than an open Internet.
You will find info under solutions/families, its called: Family Watchdog computer-based filtering service

Rural IT and Broadband support.

Broadband troubleshooting and master filter installs.
Starlink installer - one month free: https://www.starlink.com/?referral=RC-32845-88860-71
Wi-Fi and networking
Cel-Fi supply and installer - boost your mobile phone coverage legally

Educating the Kids will do the trick too??, My kids are internet users from the age of 4.. now they are 7&9 they have their own computers. There are some restrictions in the firewall router level, I have educated them along the lines of '' there are good and bad out there on the Internet....'' it worked so far hope this continues. Only one occasion I have to go and drill down to the Index.dat file to do some investigation.

Good to know there is a paid service available.
