Today I was browsing PB Tech in Chch & I saw two very similar entry level mid tower PCs sitting right next to one another on the shelf.    The cases both had USB 3 ports on top & looked quite convenient, but the cases were from different manufacturers.

One system had an AMD cpu 4 gb of ram and was priced at around $455.00 and included Windows 10.     The other one was very similar but had an Intel CPU and no Windows 10, and was priced at around $435.00

So, from that very limited bit of research I think the answer might be less than $50.00.     What do you think?

Not quite, AMD systems are quite a bit cheaper than Intel.

Also would need to know the make/model of the rest of the components as prices vary a lot for mainboards etc, depending on the specs.

Opinions are my own and not the views of my employer.

It's been well over a decade since I worked for an OEM (bigger than PBTech, but still tiny on an international scale), and from memory it was about $60/license back then for XP Home then. We were big enough that the COA's came on large rolls of stickers and we had custom media etc.

Anyone that knows can't say. Anyone who says doesn't know.

looking at the available data it can be deduced that the amount is circa twice as much as half the price.

Well, out school gets a 500 seat licence for w10, 500 seat licence for office 2016 +developer access to "all the server software we can eat" for about NZ$3,500/year so counting an education discount of 60-70% and dividing by $500...

Many thanks for that interesting info Kobiak!    And to everyone else for their replies.     I seem to remember that Microsoft was making it 'zero dollars' for some type of netbooks with very small screens.     The zero dollars deal was based on the screen size I think.     The good thing is that the percentage of money spent on the Windows OS when buying a laptop/PC has come down somewhat.

Still charge a crapload to upgrade those devices to non home tho. Not bothered on any of mine, just installed VNC and use that for remote over the lan to them.

Apples with Oranges, and MS's educational volume licensing is amazingly generous. When I first left the tertiary IT world and into private sector enterprise I looked at the price differences on things and was like "okay we won't be getting that.. or that.. or that.. or that" :-P

Those PC's are completely different, so those prices tell us nothing :-)

OEM prices to assemblers (eg PBtech) will be different to major brands (eg HP ) and different to small scale assemblers (ie small shops or
PC tech's buying just a few OEMs)

We'll never know what the big brands like HP actually pay. And as mentioned above , it may be cheaper for small low price tablet & notebooks

Its easy to find the retail price of Win OEM . Work backwards from there .

I believe they are also Upgrade licenses not OEM licenses

Also in the math above, you're forgetting to * by the number of years your using it for
