I have the following to work with...

An 8.1 Pro 64-bit PC.

A Windows 10 key paid for via TechSoup and MSVLS.

A USB drive with the ISO created by the Win7USB/DVD download tool.

Do I need to use the USB drive or does the Win10 MCT do a better job?

MCT will have a newer more updated version.

Download the tool, create a new fresh bootable Windows 10 on your USB flash and just do the upgrade process. You will find that you won't need the Windows 10 key as you can still upgrade to it for free.
