Hi -- on my new el cheapo HP laptop, the recovery drive (OEM Partition) has a drive letter assigned (D:).  Can I change this to, say, Z:, so that I can use D: as my data and program drive (where all my software looks for stuff) -- without crapping up any recovery that I might need to do?  Win 10 PreCreator.  Thanks!

Open Disk Manager (winkey + x, select Disk Manager)

 

Right click on the drive you want to change, select "Change drive letter"

Thanks -- I know how to do it, the real question was -- will that mess up any recovery I need to do.

Not sure how HP do things.

 

On my Toshiba machines the OEM recovery drive is not mapped to a drive letter. When in recovery mode it just asks which partition to run from.

possibly yes, perhaps no
Given HP's just stupid design decision having D: as the recovery , dont expect any sort of common sense outcome.
Recovery partition should of been hidden (from Win) , to stop it being overwritten .

 

If its Win10 , just make yourself a recovery USB/DVD (Download 10 from MS), or use Win's built in imaging backup & backup to USB HD.
Recovery partitions dont allways work, and are worthless if the HD fails.
