I use Win 7 on my media pc, also for streaming. For many reasons I do not want to upgrade it. Until recently Google Chrome worked fine but the last few days I have been getting mysterious issues. If I run a a desktop shortcut that previously worked perfectly, now I get a different Google page instead. The browser no longer responds correctly to keypresses or mouse clicks after clicking on the shortcut. Other things don't respond correctly. If I open task manager, there are multiple instances of Chrome running. If I close them all individually everything else seems to work okay again, but not Chrome.

I ran Malwarebytes but it found no problems. I tried reinstalling Chrome but it made no difference. Another browser that uses the Chrome engine (Slimjet) works normally, also if I click on a shortcut. I don't understand what is going on here. Does anyone else?

Start by doing an installation REPAIR on Chrome from "Control Panel" - "Programs and features" by right-clicking on Google Chrome there.

I've just done one for the wouldn't run except in "as administrator" problem and the normal fix of taking ownership etc for that wouldn't work but the repair did.

Didn't work, no option to repair, only uninstall. Reinstalling simply brings back the same problems. I know a little more now. I get "Profile error occurred, your preferences cannot be read." I looked this up and went through all the fixes, including removing the Chrome default folder under user/apps/local. Nothing helps. Does anyone know more? Is there no way to fix this damned thing? It worked fine until a few days ago. I don't know what changed.

How computerous. I just want the silly thing to work like it did before. Don't know if it ever will. I got a note from Google so they are at least aware of the problem but that doesn't really help. For some reason Chrome is the only browser that works correctly with several sites so very frustrating. I will try some other things tomorrow. Suggestions welcome.

If a version upgrade did it,
- uninstall existing
- install older version
- turn off auto update until they sort it out

I'd be surprised if it's a chrome issue, but it's not impossible.

Edit:the other option is just wait a while and see if they fix it.

Maybe manually delete the cache? Is yours 64 bit? If so, install the 32 bit. I have the 64 bit one and it doesn't work properly. Not in such a bad way, just doesn't load certain things.

im using win7 and have no problems with chrome and using version 59.0.3071.115

uninstall it and try running the standalone installer

https://www.google.com/intl/en/chrome/browser/desktop/index.html?standalone=1

if that doesn't work try the chrome canary (google chrome beta)

I will try all these things when I can get to them but I have to work around someone else. Thanks for the tips. I will post here if I find an answer. Very frustrating.

Beta is closer to a finished product. Canary is bleeding edge and code may not make it to final product.

How do I know if I'm on Canary or not? (Help -> About says "Official build")

Canary has a yellow icon.

I really really would not recommend it. It's a development aid only.

Ok, I finally got this working. I uninstalled Chrome, then deleted all Google files from user/apps. I ran Ccleaner and cleared out all remaining Chrome stuff. I ran the Chrome cleanup tool. I shut down the computer and unplugged it and waited 10 minutes. I downloaded and installed the alternate stand-alone version that puts everything in Program Files instead of apps. When I restarted, the error was gone, hopefully forever. I have no idea what caused it.
