I just booted my Notebook and got a Win 10 update message. I let it run and the computer rebooted. I then had a message that it was configuring updates. After awhile, it rebooted. I then got a message that it couldn't complete the updates so it was undoing them. Reboot. Then a message that it can't complete undoing the changes. It seems to be stuck in a undoing changes/can't undo changes loop.

Advice, please. From a long time ago I remember something about doing a system restore from the command line. Would that work here? What is the procedure. What else can I try?

Reinstalling is not out of the question but I would prefer to avoid that if at all possible since I'm not sure how to go about it and I will have to pull out disks and drives and Google a hundred sites and I don't have a lot of patience for that crap anymore. I am a 73 year-old computer user, no longer a hobbiest geek. I just want the thing to work. I don't want to have to mess around with a lot of arcane technical stuff I only half-remember. I'm looking for the easiest out here. [/grump]

I have encountered this from time to time and I have just run update again and it has worked. Sometimes it takes a few attempts. This latest update is essential as its fixing some nasty issues

Never mind. It fixed itself after all. I don't know how they manage to keep making Windows even slower, but after circling the drain for a good 15 minutes, it suddenly started installing some updates and eventually booted back to my normal home screen. I guess it's fixed, or at least what passes for that in the Microsoft universe.

Edit: I used to enjoy mucking about with pc problems but boy am I over it.

My Win 10 install had stopped installing updates since November. I tried the Windows Update tool, no change. I tried manually deleting the update folder and restarting the service, no change. I tried a full reset (ie clean install), no change. Then it decided to offer me the Win 10 Fall Creators Update. I installed that. Now update works. Oh well. So if you are stuck in a no update position you could try that.

Does it install in the middle of your favourite movie? Mine loves to do that.

Turned out to be disk space issues.

Yeah, and we aren't talking 1 or 2GB of free space either. Make sure you have at least 5-10GB available.

These reboot loops are unfortunately a common tale when it comes to Windows updates.

Try SHIFT+F8. Alternatively, boot from a USB drive to repair Windows. See next point.

Download the Windows Media Creation Tool: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10. Use that tool to create a bootable USB drive. (Note that this will always download the latest version of Windows). Boot from media and either re-install or repair.

I'm pretty sure it's already got the creators update. This may possibly be a disk space issue as well, but the reality is this is only a small 32GB machine so there isn't any way to give it more space.

At the end of the day disabling the update would be the fix, but that seems pretty much impossible on Win 10 home. Realistically I'm probably just going to need to reinstall Win 10 from scratch at some point when I have time.

Umm ... CHrome has been like that since Windows 10. In fact IE is much better since Win 10. Not sure why. Never used to be like that.

Probably not all that relevant, but downloading a recent / latest update to a laptop did allow my main PC to talk to said laptop a lot more reliably - just using file explorer on main PC to access stuff on the laptop seems to work properly instead of working one time in ten and lots of cannot be accessed messages.

So they do come in handy.

Download the lasted ISO, burn to DVD & do the update from that DVD(or USB) from within Win
That usually gets it installed .

I ditched Chrome for Firefox. Runs much better and uses less memory.

As for the fall update. I had 3 computers get stuck in an endless loop of installing it, failing then trying to recover without ever recovering. Re-installed all 3 from scratch and omg they run so much better now! Upgrade from Creators to Fall broke the intel display drivers on them all and wouldnt run anything other than the generic microsoft driver - this in turn broke multiple screens including USB-HDMI adapters (each wanted 3 monitors). Re-Installing them all from scratch directly with the fall update and they all work perfectly now. Pity they were all then donated away. Oh well.
