Hello all,

I'm new here at this forum but i hope you can help me with this...

The Problem:

- When I open IExplorer, My Computer or any other folders, explorer.exe ends and restarts again, i.e, everything disappears including taskbar and than it returns to normal, except that the folders that were open are now closed, same to IExplorer.
- No error message is shown.

What I Know:

- I'm running XP Pro SP2.
- In Safe Mode this does not happens.
- AVG Free, CCleaner, Advanced Windows Care and other Anti-Spyware-Malaware-Virus-and-other-stuff programs healed all the problems found but still no positive result in my specific problem.

I don't know what to say more, i hope this is enough at least to give you an idea. If you want i can post some software logs like HJT or other.

Please give me a solution that does not involve new XP installation.

thanks for reply.

the problem is that i'm using an external USB DVD driver and i don't know if it will work with the reinstall. I'm also affraid of damaging my dear computer with loosing data or something...

If someone can give me a solution besides reinstall i'll appreciate it.

Hi Andre, welcome to Geekzone. I'm certainly no expert in the XP area, but hopefully we can get some sort of ball rolling here...

As your problem doesn't occur in Safe Mode, it'll either be a piece of software you have loaded on your machine that is causing the problem or a registry key which is not activated in Safe Mode.

A few questions:
- What software (and versions) do you have on your machine?
- Is your BIOS fully up-to-date?
- Do you have all current Microsoft patches and security updates installed?
- Do you have the latest video drivers for you graphics display?

Here it goes,

I don't know what kind of software you're talking about because my list is to big but i'll try to say to you anyway:
Many games like PES 2008, NFS ProStreet, Gears Of War, Call of Duty 4, MOH Airborne, Assassin's Creed...
Other software like Adobe Acrobat, MS Office 2003, CD/DVD Burn software like Alcohol 120% and Nero Burning Rom, i have a lot of benchmark tools and GIS software (Geografical Information Systems).
I use AVG Free CCleaner and Advanced Windows Care and all with latest versions.
Do you really want me to say all the versions from the software listed above?

"- Is your BIOS fully up-to-date?"

I think it is, but i'm not sure. Can you tell me how to ensure myself? My MB it's an Asus P5K.

"- Do you have all current Microsoft patches and security updates installed?"

yes, i do.

"- Do you have the latest video drivers for you graphics display?"

yes, i do.

NOTE: I have an ideia about the problem, a couple of days ago i've unninstalled CCleaner and it asked about the files in the Vault. I clicked the button that said DELETE. I think this is where my problem started...

If youve potentially deleted a requiredfile then best thing to try and fix it is to do a Windows repair.
Youll need your Windows CD for it tho.

*** You do the following at your own risk, I cannot be held responsible for any issues that may arise***
In saying that ive never had a problem doing the following.....

Boot off your Windows XP CD - follow the prompts until you get to the part that asks about what drive you want to install on - there should be an option there to Repair (R) - use that option and let Windows do its thing...... make sure you do NOT select the first repair option that appears while booting off the CD, ignore that one and keep going until you hit the one as mentioned above.

Basically what this option does is reinstalls all the base Windows files, leaving your documents and programs as they are, so in theory everything should still run fine afterwards. (There may be the odd program you might have to repair/reinstall but most should be fine).

Follow xpd's advice - and BIOS updates (if your version is not the latest) for your motherboard can be found here.

Do you have Photoshop 7 by any chance?

Edit: Also look at disabling all of your Browser Helper Objects (BHO's) using the IE add-on manager that came with SP2. Once all BHO's are disabled, re-add the ones you want to keep one by one and monitor your system for any reoccurrences of your problem. On this subject - do you know what the geBuRLFu.dll BHO is?

Also, do you have a Windows CE palm pilot type device? I see wcescomm.exe is running - some malware can set itself up as this process. Security Task Manager is a good program for checking your computers security in regards to BHO's and many other types of malware.

I have a winxp pro sp2 cd but i'm not sure how to boot it and not sure if my usb external DVD drive works for these.
Do you think it's needed to do a full data backup before doing the repair?
I ran the setup and there was an "upgrade" option, do you think i should do this?

I do not have Photoshop...

If you are in doubt if you need a full data backup, then you need a full data backup. Even if don't have any software problem, at any time your HDD may fail and you lose everything.

I would be doing a backup about NOW.

After i clean all the BHO's except the one from AVG i get the following log.
I do have a palm device.
Do you think my external USB DVD drive will work to reinstal or repair my OS?

Problem solved.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\geBuRLFu.dll ----- This was the problem. A stupid BHO that i couldn't fix with HiJackThis but with Windows Task Manager it was ok.

Now i can do all the things that i said i couldn't do before.
