So I am out of space again - at the moment have all my drives in pairs as mirrors, all 16 bays of my external esata cases full with mostly 2 and 3 tb drives, some 5s.

Anyway, the logical solution is to give storage spaces another shot. It was hopeless when I tried it on 8 but apparantly it is better now.

The thing I found back then is I could only make 16 TB volumes which TBH is a bit crap of it.

Has that been solved in 10 so I could take several of the drives, set them up as a parity space (since its just movies, music and my video camera footage so basically archival) and make a 30+ TB space to stick everything on instead of needlessly breaking it up into smaller ones?

Get a trial of drivebender i find it easier to deal with than storage spaces.

There’s other software also, drivepool I think.

I use Drivepool. have done since WHS2011. Pool drives of any size, specify duplication settings per pool or per folder, Files stored in standard NTFS folders. Add disks to pools at any time, add disks to multiple pools, use the disks for other stuff too if you like.
I also have the companion software Scanner which allows the system to evacuate failing disks (I've had this work).

I may sound a little too enthusiastic, but that's because have tried very hard to break it, and I have not succeeded.
I've even transferred disks to a new machine, installed Drivepool and the pool is recognized and reinstated.

I have no idea what storage spaces is like now, but there were terrible quirks and some horror stories when it was first released. Some people lost a lot of data.

How much is drive pool? And have you ever had a lock up from an undiagnosed falling drive overloaded the sata bus?

Occasional problems I get with drivebender more windows I think then their software.

Never had it lock up, but I've only ever had one drive fail and Scanner got it early.

Price appears to be 60 USD for Drivepool and Scanner together which is getting quite pricey now. I think I paid half that because I had a copy for WHS2011.

I use Storage Spaces on W10, a really basic mirror 2x4TB. Works fine. No idea if / how it would alert me if a drive was going bad.

Unless something has changed pretty recently, windows doesn't know or care about drive health, it just tells you when it fails to read/write. That's usually way too late.

Doesn't really matter if a drive fails, I have incremental backups. It'd just be annoying.

Ive decided I will move the old crappy SD TV show storage over to a storage space and see how bad it really is as I wont miss old shows in blurryvision if it all packs a sad. Found another problem on the gaming PC when I was playing around with storage spaces on a couple of old USB drives, I have now broken my ability to auto unlock bitlocker drives, or encrypt new ones. FFFFF microsoft why does nothing work properly.

It bluescreened while I was making a storage space with a presumed dickky USB mechanical drive and then all the other stuff failed. I will sort that out later but for now it has made a space OK across 4 2TB old mechanical USB drives (without the 5th) and is performaing about as bad as you would expect but its reliability I care about. Will move these drives to the storage computer once they are full and then see how it holds on. Set up as a parity space giving me 5 and a bit TB of space to fill up with vintage episodes of CSI etc.
