I have cloned my hdd in my Toshiba Satellite P50-A onto an ssd in order to swap it out but the machine doesn't seem to recognise it.

The cloning went fine, and everything seems identical but on boot up it says there is no media present.

I notice in the bios my exact hdd including serial number is specified and I am unable to change it.

Is there a way to do this?

Not that I could see anywhere.

At the boot section it had the standard options of hdd, usb, and cd.
In the main section it specified the type and serial number of the hdd but it was greyed out so I couldn’t change it to anything else

Try removing power and battery for a while and then try bios again.

I generally find it better to reinstall the operating system rather than copy an OS image across, then copy any data - though I don't keep data on my OS disk party for this reason. Reinstall sets everything up fresh, but it takes longer.

What’s the best process for reinstalling? Just create an install disk from within windows it is there some good 3rd party software?

Not necessarily. Depends on your cloning method/tool and the state of the disk before the image was written (e.g. was the disk pre-partitioned and the image loaded onto a non-bootable partition etc).

True, it probably was partitioned already.

What state does it need to be in to be a proper clone?

I recently replaced an HDD with a SSD on a 5 year old Toshiba Satellite laptop which was still running Windows 7 Home. I downloaded the Windows 10 ISO file, created an install USB using rufus software, then swapped the drives, and installed a fresh Windows 10 using the license code from the Windows 7 sticker on the laptop. Data transfer was not needed. If it is, it would be best to temporarily transfer all data to an external hard drive until the new SSD is in place and data / apps can be reinstalled. Ninite can be used to speed up re-install of the common apps.

you need to use macrium free and "clone" it not back up
