Hi guys,

Just purchased an HP omen 17" laptop and need to upgrade to Pro, I purchased an upgrade licence but the key is not accepted.
Microsoft advised I need to do a fresh install so they provided a link to download win 10 pro 64bit.

I have tried multiple ways to do the install, upgrade, format the hard drive etc but it never asks for a product key and installs home edition even though its a pro image.

From what I can find out it appears the product key is in the bios so it automatically activates and installs home edition. Is there a way I can apply the pro key in bios so that I can do the install?

I think you will need HP to help you with this.  I am a Windows and Linux 'distro' hopper & have re-installed Windows 10 many times & it activates as Windows 10 Home via the digital entitlement thing.  It all happens automatically without me doing a thing.  I've never dared to choose another edition such as Pro in case I screw up the system.

Yes, key type will be BIOS coded.

Assuming the upgrade purchased supplied a key - You'll likely need to install that new key once in the prebuilt windows using one of the approved methods.

I'm lead to believe Windows10 is much simpler in terms of feature locks. So everyone pretty much gets the same media/version and the key denotes the features enabled/installed.

Assuming adding/editing ei.cfg still works for the latest Windows 10 Setup:

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-hardware/manufacture/desktop/windows-setup-edition-configuration-and-product-id-files--eicfg-and-pidtxt

Basically the sources\ei.cfg file is used to specify the Windows edition you want to install, edit on the USB media or image before burning to disc.

example:

[EditionID]

Professional

[Channel]

Retail

There's also the method where you edit the Edition specified in the registry and perform an in-place upgrade.

That worked perfectly thank you.
