Ran into an issue installing printers with Windows 10 from a user who we upgraded from Windows 7 - he wanted to install a printer, so hit search, typed in printers and selected the first option - this opened settings
He then clicked on "add a printer", and after the system had loaded a list of available network printers. He then picked one, it installed and then immediately said that the printer was offline and needed maintenance.

Digging into this, it would seem that the list of printers that settings brings back are not our network printers ...
When it "installs" the printer, it is installing a generic driver and connecting it to a WSD port (whatever that is)

To ACTUALLY install the printer one seems to have to wait for the list to populate, click I can't find and then use the old control panel way of doing things ..
Which is how I have been doing it , which is why I haven't seen this issue before ..

So my question - any way to install a network printer from settings without waiting for a list to populate and then clicking its not listed
Or is there a way to stop W10 from populating the list with these fake printers?

You don't have to wait, you can click on "The printer that I ....." anytime.

Control panel is still available, click on the start button and type control and then select it. The older printer setup is still available.

I may not have made it clear; as an administrator I am aware that the old way to add a network printer is available

However I am trying to figure out if there is a way of adding network printers to W10 just using settings - or why these printers are not being picked up by W10 correctly (why the generic driver)
Do I blame W10 or is this a printer manufacturer issue (Fuji Xerox in this instance)

On Win 10

On the start menu, type ‘print management’

On the dialog that opens on the left side under ‘print servers’, select your print server, click ‘add printer’

WSD stands for Web Services for Devices.

WSD port, just asking for issues

So,
Setup the printer with a Static Ip
Add that IP as a new TCPIP printer port
** Use the control panel ***
Ad a TCPIP printer port in printers & devices, then add the new printer on that port
Set the printer as default , if you dont specify default printer, Win10 will keep changing the default

Make sure you untick the box that advises " Let Windows determine the printer driver" or similar. It can default to a common PCL or PS genreic driver, without the features or benefits of the proper printer driver.

As it's a Xerox - you could be losing out on stapling, folding, secure print, accounting etc, which office MFD's are infested with.

Most of the replies are correct (90% of my job is installing printers and MFDs)

Two steps sum up the best process:-

  1. Turn off WSD before connecting the device to the network
  2. Install onto TCP/IP port using Control Panel > Devices and Printers > Add printer

(Do not simply change the port of the already installed Generic driver)

Managed to find the setting on the web console to disable WSD advertising (except on one model); now that it has been done, there is only one printer that appears when searching for printers under Settings -> Printers

Then the user can click on "printer not listed" and use the old method to find our TCP/IP network printers
