Hey guys,

I'm coming for help on a peculiar issue I have been having on my main Desktop PC. (Asus Z370-G + 8700K, if that helps)

I think it started after that last Windows update (if it wasn't caused by it, timing was suspiciously close).

The problewm here, after a certain time after boot (the length of duration seems to vary randomly) some of my USB ports shut down: In the Device Manager, I can normally see 2x "USB Root Hub (3.0)". When this happens, I can only see one.

I have moved mouse and keyboard to the USB ports that don't shutdown so I can keep using the PC instead of losing all control but this is stillv ery annoying as I lose other peripherals and an external HDD.

Of note, when this happens, the Bluetooth also "disappears". As in whatever that was connected drops out and I can't see "Bluetooth" in the Device Manager and cannot enable Bluetooth in the settings.

Has anyone come across something similar?

I have updated the BIOS and various drivers with the latest from ASUS.

My next move is probably a full reinstall but given the task, I'd rather not if I can avoid it...

Thanks

Just a thought: Under settings/system/ power and sleep/additional/change plan/advanced, USB settings maybe try selective suspend disabled? And Under device manager, USB properties there is also under power management 'allow computer to turn off this device to save power' Untick that? Or check bios to see if there are power settings for the USBs? Device manager likely has power settings for Bluetooth too.

Thanks, I have checked these and disabled/unticked as require but that doesn't seem to have fixed my issue.

Did you try uninstalling the USBs from device manager? I think a restart automatically reinstalls them. I haven’t had to do that for a very long time so google the process.

Another random thought is try unplugging as many things as possible from your pc and start adding them back on one at a time over time- maybe one of your gizmos is causing it somehow.

Also does Asus have any software on there that might affect power settings? I know they like to bundle software...

Thanks for that, I'll give that a try (the unplugging all thing)

As for bundeled software, nothing I could find, no and it started pretty suddenly (around the time I upgraded Windows) on an otherwise very stable PC I built myself about 6 months ago

Are these on board ports or case ports that are cabled to jumpers?

Both. Some of the ports that stop working are straight on the Mobo. I also seem to lose the 2 ports that are on the PC case and wired into the Mobo

Have you checked your BIOS?

USB ports sleeping is a frustrating aspect of Windows - plug an external HDD into a fresh Windows install and it will go to sleep after a period of time. Sometimes this is power settings related and on other machines it can also be dictated by BIOS.

Yeah, I updated the BIOS and had a poke around the "Advanced" settings. There was a section dedicated to USB but nothing I could find that looked like it might help... It was mostly about disabling USB ports.

I'll take another look tonight.

Are the ports that turn off part of a specific controller? Eg Intel vs Realtek/Marvell/VIA. If you cant find any USB suspend settings that are causing the grief then see if you can find the controller chip on your motherboard for those ports and give it a flick.

I lost 4 out of 6 USB 3 ports when my VIA controller seemingly disappeared, gave my motherboard a de-dusting and applied reasonable pressure to the chip and it came back, for now i suppose :)

Well, I messed around with a few things and currently the issue no longer happens. Since then, Microsoft has pushed out another update to my computer which may well be what fixed the issue, who knows..

Since it was intermitted and seemingly random, it was hard to pinpoint what the fix was...
