So I came home from work today and turned on my PC then went and opened a few windows etc.

When I came back my PC was running but I had a blank screen. I waited a bit before turning it off and on again.

I've done this a few times, when it starts up I see the BIOS menu, windows icon and loading spinner then it goes blank. I've once had a blue screen saying windows failed to load but not all the time. I left the blank screen for 10-15 mins and went to the shop thinking that windows may be very load to load but nothing.

Any ideas?

Last thing I did last night was shut down and install update.

Do you have a video card in addition to the motherboard display output by any chance?

I believe so, the black screen with blue windows tiles and the spinning loader is from the graphics card isn't it?

You will have to check. In some systems if you update the video card Windows will default to the motherboard video output - if you have the monitor plugged to a video card (and not to the motherboard) then you will see a black screen... Plug the monitor to the motherboard to see if anything appears.

How would I plug the monitor into the motherboard? my motherboard doesn't have a VGA or DVI, HDMI input on it.

Are you thinking my graphics card is broken? I may have an old one I could replace it with this troubleshoot that.

No, I am not thinking your graphics card is broken (although it could be possible). I was only asking about the motherboard because as I explained above sometimes Windows might start sending output to one display with no monitor attached. It's obvious not the case here.

Oh right, I understood that question as, if there a video card output vs a motherboard output (BIOS screen vs other types)

So it could motherboard or graphics card issue? I'll switch out the graphics card shortly.. any other ideas?
