I just found a blue circle icon in my Win 10 taskbar after the latest update.

It turned out to be Microsoft Cortana, so I clicked on it to check it out only to discover that it's only function is to announce that it doesn't work! Naturally I went to uninstall this (literally) useless software but I can't. Not only that, it had granted itself microphone and background apps permissions, but for what purpose?

Anyone connected to Microsoft know what is going on here?

Cortana is Microsofts answer to Google Assistant\Siri.  You can get it to work by changing languages\region, and it was alright (TBH the bits of it that actually worked were pretty good) when I last tried it, but given the lack of uptake of Bing I suspect it will eventually die much like windows phone.  A bit of a pity because both had the seeds of something really good.

There is no purpose. Cortana was there from the start of Windows 10. It failed to gain traction and will slowly Diss from consumer versions.

You can at least hide it from the taskbar. Microsoft should've been a leader in voice assistants as they pretty much invented and popularised it first, but bad management.has doomed it.

No joke. The first voice-activated software was Microsoft Voice Command for Pocket PC - back in 2003.

Cortana should be good but try using voice commands in an open office. Or try using Cortana with English-NZ as system language. Or try using Cortana and getting Bing results...

I would say 'whats the point of Bing'

MS should just give up on that as well , or at least partner with Google & just rebrand google as Bing (as they did with Edge).

Because you are the product. Edge may now be based on Chromium, but Microsoft still retains control of user data.

I'd be happier if they allowed you to customise the voice assistant between Cortana / Google / Alexa like many other platforms do now.

Try just using Edge, it's great now.  Works so much faster with Windows than Chrome ever did for me.

It's easy enough to get rid of but a far better user experience would be to make it an opt in when installing Windows.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.
