I have an opportunity to get a 28" monitor (3840x2160).

Looking at graphics cards the prices are frightening and the specs don't seem to mention the resolution. I don't want gaming, only ordinary Windows operation and possibly videos with VLC.

Has anyone any recommendations ?  Thanks.

do you have onboard graphics? anything from the last 5-8 years should be able to cope with general browsing and videos at that resolution.

failing that one of the cheapest new graphics cards you can find, a 1030 or 1050 would do the trick

Thanks. I have no onboard, just NVidia GEForce 9600 GT.  That's no good I think ?

Will 1030 or 1050 identify the card you suggest? Any other name ?

Just check what inputs the display has on it, there are some that have weaker support on the HDMI than on the displayport input and I have seen some single slot 1030s from prebuilt PCs that only have a HDMI and DVI on them.

Right. Couldn't find a 1050 and the 1030 didn't seem to have enough resolution. Or am I wrong ?

Assuming the monitor will take that over its HDMI input. Some earlier ones didnt do 4k at any more than 30Hz over the HDMI, but were fine on displayport.

Gtx 1060 or 1070 / 2060/2070 would be your sweet spot

Thanks for the replies (and the link from Jase). That was a better price. Some are crazy prices and must be way above my needs. (Like the GTX ones)

The monitor is Samsung U28E 690D but I can't find specs for it.

150 - 200 bucks on trade me for a 1060, about a bucket of kidneys in the supermarket

sweet spot for what? they just need it to run a 4k display for web browsing and videos. those cards are gaming cards and more than double what you would pay for a new lower spec one.

True, we'll never be playing games. The tradeMe ones are better priced, but knowing what would and what may not be ideal is a bit hard for me.

Motherboard is Asus  PRIME B250M-K
