Whats a good alternative to the one that comes with it that for some reason insists on analyizing all the connected drives before letting me choose which ones to defrag, and will actuall get some defragging done rather then leaving the drive mostly showing as red when connected to a machine with the older XP type defragger on it?

Oh, and free too ;)

Ive been using Defraggler (http://www.defraggler.com/) with success. Admittedly I'm using 32bit, but the current version supports 64bit.

Got a nice, easy to use GUI. Also has options such as degragging a single file or a particular folder.

P.S. Isn't Diskeeper paid software?

JkDefrag.

Quite popular and very fast (and free), has 64bit support etc.

oodefrag gets my vote. 64bit native edition too. i like the different optimization strategies available as well as the offline defrag option on reboot

In todays day and age, with drives that support NCQ, defragmenting isn't needed as much, but I don't like how Vista doesn't have a visual representation of your fragmentation. It just lets you defrag or not.

I dont like that it has to thrash away at all the drives, which have not changed since last time inorder to get to the screen where I choose what to defrag.

I grabbed that smart defrag and it seems to be doing the trick ok. Thanks for the other recommendations tho.

OO Defrag lets you defrag using optmal patterns for file access, OS booting etc which rearrange the files location on the disk as well as performing a defrag (i'm sure some of the other tools do this as well). This really does help speed up your PC (even if you only do it once after teh initial installation!)

Diskeeper FTW! The new version 2009 is available on their website now. Some improvements over 2008, including 64-bit support for the home edition and the inclusion of file sequencing (i-faast) into the Pro version.

I am still using Diskeeper 2008 Pro on 32-bit VistaHP and XP Pro, and it's excellent. Will check out the new version later this weekend when I have time,

+ another for diskeeper, but free is best.

Nothing more free than the one that comes with Vista. Try scheduling a task and creating a batch/cmd file that will run the defrag at whatever time you want and on the drive you select.

defrag /?
Description: Locates and consolidates fragmented files on local volumes to
improve system performance.

Syntax: defrag <volume> -a [-v]
defrag <volume> [{-r | -w}] [-f] [-v]
defrag -c [{-r | -w}] [-f] [-v]

Parameters:

Value Description

<volume> Specifies the drive letter or mount point path of the volume to
be defragmented or analyzed.

-c Defragments all volumes on this computer.

-a Performs fragmentation analysis only.

-r Performs partial defragmentation (default). Attempts to
consolidate only fragments smaller than 64 megabytes (MB).

-w Performs full defragmentation. Attempts to consolidate all file
fragments, regardless of their size.

-f Forces defragmentation of the volume when free space is low.

-v Specifies verbose mode. The defragmentation and analysis output
is more detailed.

-? Displays this help information.

Examples:

defrag -c -v

Have tried both
