So the pre-beta has come out, and I've had a chance to play with it.

At this stage, its just Vista, but with some additional features. I think this is what this release is about, purely to show what will be included in Windows 7.

The 'Show Desktop' icon has been replaced with a button that sits to the right of the clock. This is good, as I think the Show Desktop button is imperritive in today's desktop needs.

It has new themes and the control panel looks a bit different, but right now, its no different to Vista.
It may have been running on the 7 kernel, but I don't know. The 7 kernel is said to be very small by todays standards. I saw a video with a guy from Microsoft giving a seminar and said it was about 40mb, but still not as small as he would like it.

Hmmm. As far as I know there's no pre-beta of Windows 7 available - except for some invited to a very close NDA beta and the old build distributed at the Los Angeles PDC 2008.

Where did you find your pre-beta?

Apparently anyone can download it as a Torrent!  But the first beta may be out next month, possibly at CES.

It's commonly known that if you have access to windows 7 install media in some way you can use your Vista Beta or RC key from a few years back with the Windows 7 prebeta. Its not exactly that secretive.

I've also heard quite a few other unannounced things about it that i won't mention for obvious reasons

I won't lie, I did download it via Torrent, but its not a hacked version or anything, it expires after 30 days without a valid key.

Having a look around youtube etc, there are newer versions. The pre-beta I had was 68XX, but new videos show 69XX.
Heres a video of the new taskbar

It looks very Mac-esque, but the window preview on it looks very nice, and smooth.

6956 version runs media centre well with several changes one major problem is the guide.  Channel changes are smooth and quick no longer is there a decoder problem. Things are looking good for the official beta release nice new deskrop and toolbar seems pretty stable
