every one of my laptops develops either failure to sleep or failure to wake or both

this one about 2 years old has recently been infected with wakes from sleep or hibernate to a blank screen if it has slept or hibernated for a few hours.

so when it wakes it presumably goes to the lock screen

is there any way to force reboot when in lock screen using only keyboard

You could try turning on Narrator then using the arrows/ tab keys to navigate to shutdown

In Windows 10, press Windows logo key  + Ctrl + Enter  to turn on Narrator

If you think it is still alive under the blank screen then you could try Win + Ctrl + Shift + B to restart the video driver.

I've done that - didn't work. I can see it refreshes the screen when the screen is on, but under the blank screen issue it won't do anything useful.

i think that's too complicated. i need blindly nagivate to enter password to log in.

I just have set my power button to shut down when pressed ... let's see if this does anything the next time it happens

meanwhile hoping that i don't accidentally touch this button when halfway through doing work! which i guarantee will happen hence i'm after hotkeys rather than the almighty power button

i'm also not keen on a full reinstall as i have done these things in the past only to have the same issue and i've wasted months of my life reinstalling and reconfiguring everything for zero gains. i don't have time for this anymore unfortunately.

Have you turned off Fast startup in the Power settings?

I have an OpenSSH server installed on my Windows 10 box.  Using that I can ssh into it from another PC or my phone and command line reboot it:

shutdown /r /t 1

If you have another Windows box you can also use a remote shutdown command from there:

shutdown /r /m \\MachineName /t 1

I have never tried that - I think you need to set up the right registry settings beforehand so that remote shutdown is allowed.
