Got up early to download and install Windows 11 on to my five year old desktop machine (intel Core i7, lots of RAM, etc).

Run the PC Health Check required and hit my first issue:

Currently busy rebooting my machine to change my BIOS settings for TPM 2.0

Yes it seems we're now being forced to turn on TPM. Which a lot of self built PC's do not have on by default.

You can get around this with a dll file change (find appraiserres.dl in the win 11 iso and replace it with the one from a win 10 iso).

Or in your motherboard you can find it as PTT(intel) or fTPM(amd).

What if the machine doesn't have a TPM chip?

Do the above. Replace the DLL file in a Win 11 iso and away you go. Who knows how long this work around will work.

And then wait for an update to replace the DLL and set off all sorts of fun most likely :)

It never ceases to amaze me the short-sightedness of MS sometimes. Why require something that a good percentage of computers won't have, without providing a built-in workaround, that doesn't require people to manually copy files. It's a recipe for disaster.

Wait for some dodgy website to provide a download link to the 'fix' which is a DLL with some built-in tracking or malware or backdoor.

Or only has the earlier version? - TPM 1.2

Especially since most of the sales pitch is that they're a democratised OS that you should be able to do anything with.

They say tpm 1.2 is supported but not ‘recommended’.

I just found out my motherboard has a TPM, and now it's on.  I'll do your little dance, Microsoft!

I mean you can use the win 10 iso from microsoft's media creation tool and swap the dll around, probably as safe as you can be doing the work around.

I'll be honest it's really bizarre why they're doing this.
