Now this is pretty cool! -

Microsoft unveils Windows 365, a Windows 10 PC in the cloud
It's a virtual machine that anyone can use anywhere.

Windows 365, a new service announced today at the Microsoft Inspire conference, is basically an unintentional riff on the Yo Dawg meme: Microsoft put Windows in the cloud so you can run a Windows computer while you're running your computer. You can just call it a Cloud PC, as Microsoft does. It's basically an easy-to-use virtual machine that lets you hop into your own Windows 10 (and eventually Windows 11) installation on any device, be it a Mac, iPad, Linux device or Android tablet. Xzibit would be proud.

This would be really good in terms of being able to work from home without having to take my work laptop home every night.

What will you access it from? Surely you want a decent sized screen, keyboard, mouse....

Been able to this for quite some time in Azure and AWS

Amazon WorkSpaces | Cloud Native Persistent Desktop Virtualization

Windows Virtual Desktop | Remote Desktop | Microsoft Azure

Looks like they are just making it more Home user friendly.

I'm not into computers so I don't have that sort of stuff at home. I'd just like to be able to use my personal laptop on rare occasions when I can't get into the office - e.g. yesterday when the trains were disrupted.

Does it come with licences for the 'supported' apps or that's just a recommendation or limitation?

I'm going to say no - knowing MS :-)

I've had a couple of these for quite a few years. I haven't used the U3 functionality for a long time but it was a pretty cool function to use. Basically you could take your laptop with you on a USB stick

I need to understand more what this could mean for me -- I don't just use MS software, I use various programming languages to develop data analysis programs, I use VNC to connect to a series of Pis and Pandas, I use FortiClient VPN to my place of work to run machines via RDP there, I use graphing software.  Shall I be able to have all these, and more, available on a virtual machine?  Help!

It depends on how it scales really. That is only about $550 per year, $1650 over three years. We currently pay around $2000-$2500 for laptops with an expected life of around 3 years. We have some users who have Ipad Pros who only have a laptop for a few Windows apps that don't have a function available on an Ipad. We could in theory use this service to deliver that functionality to their Ipads. Simliar I could see this replacing RDS setups in some organisations.
