A family member is looking at getting a laptop for general home use - internet, email, word processing

They are looking at a HP with a Intel Pentium Gold. I’m not up to date with processors - is this an ok processor for home use?

How would it compare with an i3 or i5?

Pentium Gold sits below the i3 (and well below i5). It's a budget processor range.

Also, generally buying a budget CPU in a laptop means the rest of the system is budget as well, so slow drives, basic video - might think "thats fine", it drives you up the wall pretty quick.

Thanks all, I thought that to be the case - will steer them to an i3 minimum

I would add, making sure it has a SSD Hard Drive is more important than the processor .
The cheapies have slow mechanical Hard Drives, thats the usual bottleneck with Win10

Geekzone is blind to the needs of this type of user. For just those things, just about any laptop will do.

I recently got my missus a ASUS E410MA-EK376T 14.0" N5030 4GB 256G, and for it's price it kicks butt.
To go I3 or better I'd have had to have spent a lot more, and the reality is, the difference wouldn't have been noticed.

It's plenty responsive, the storage is perfectly sufficient for her needs, and the battery lasts a reasonable length of time.

No, not blind, just experience.

RECENT experience showed me that these budget CPUs are much better than expected .
(are they rebadged old gen i3 ??)

I usually recommend/sell i3 minimum, but when Ive had to setup new laptops with these new Pentiums, I was surprised they arnt as bad as I'd thought.
Its 2021 , even budget CPUs are much faster than they used to be .
