I have been a Windows 'Insider' for 7 years and the journey has been fun but my current modest Dell Optiplex 9020 is going to have to be replaced if I want to continue with win 11 or I will need to reinstall win 10 from scratch.

Pondered what to do but decided I would like to keep with win 11 and so that means I need a new computer.

Been a long time since I built one from scratch so I am out of touch, but I could still do it. I have asked PBTech for hardware suggestions, and I might just tell them to build it! The biggest cost item is the CPU it seems.

Anyway, stuff is still cheap compared with what we paid in the early days!

Anyone done a new comp, or thinking of it, to meet win 11 restrictions? Please, no moaning or griping - it is what it is! We have a choice to stick with 10.

DTC have built a couple of computers for me. The build costs $60 and I couldn't get it done better for twice that myself in terms of my time. Obviously, it depends if you are doing it yourself for enjoyment or not.

Have a look at some of the ex-lease offerings out there, few of the sites I've seen have some HP and Dell workstations with Gen 8 CPUs (Intel)

Have you upgraded to an SSD?

I have a PC that is now around 6 years old.

I upgraded it to an SSD and installed Windows 10 on it a couple of years ago.

It absolutely flies compared to the original setup of Windows 7 and a conventional HDD.

SSD drives are really cheap now.

There are still 4 years of official support for Windows 10.

EDIT: Are you sure it wont run windows 11:https://www.dell.com/community/Optiplex-Desktops/TPM-2-0-for-Optiplex-9020/td-p/7924985

Have you run whynotwin11 on it? The MS tool was apparently pretty bad.

The Optiplex 9020 uses Gen 4 Intel CPUs, Windows 11 needs Gen 8 and above.

Going by the latest blogs/youtube clips I've seen it looks like it'll be possible to install it but it won't receive updates

Agree, it wont be support, so best to upgrade if you want to be on Win 11, otherwise as noted above, there's plenty more life left in Windows 10.

Now is not at all a good time to be buying a new PC (Prices are very high), so wouldn't suggest you buy it just for windows 11.

I am keen on ex-lease Dell/HP's - have bought several for me and friends. And, yes, they all come with SSDs. Great value, but haven't seen any yet with 8th gen cpu. Perhaps I need to do more browsing! But, there won't be many is my bet.

Cheers and thanks for replies.

Thanks to @DjShadow I got searching more ex-lease sites and found a Dell Optiplex 3060 SFF with 8th gen I5 8500 and TPM2.0!! This model and the I5 are on the win 11 lists.

Price was good - $699 reduced from $1,199. A lot cheaper than building one and nice size for my desk.

Comes with 128GB NVMe and 500GB HDD plus two video ports that I need. Shuffle the 9020 to my wife and away I go!

So, really chuffed.

You will receive updates to Win 11 but not any feature updates.  I'm in that situation with an old 10 year old PC that I installed Win 11 on and have been booted out of the  Insider Program but am still receiving updates.

If anyone wants to go on with win 11 I can point you to the seller I used. There are 5 left!!

At own risk, of course!! But will confirm it's win 11 compatibility when it arrives.

Not really.

Anything that doesn't run Windows 11, shouldn't really be entering the second hand market (8th gen is now 4 years old), it should already be second hand..

Windows 10 is supported (currently until 2024), so they are supported for a decent amount of life.

@xpd for example the "Gaming" PC you're selling is now 7-8 years old (noting you're now selling it third hand).

Mine ? The CPU and case and PSU are second hand (from reputable sources), the rest was purchased new.
