This has been going on a little while now. Pretty much every day, the first time I don an Alt+Tab to switch applications, there's a 'freeze' and then explorer crashes and re-loads. After that, no longer a problem.

It's a minor niggle, but a niggle all the same. Anyone else experienced this?

Sounds like a potential shell extension or explorer extension is crashing.

These tips may (or may not anymore, it's an older acticle!) help: https://superuser.com/questions/286000/how-to-list-explorer-extensions-and-disable-them

The SysInternals tools are pretty good, and are kept up to date.

Thanks for the tip, I'll give SysInternals  a go.
