The final version of internet explorer 8 will be released in less than 7 hours:

http://www.crn.com/software/215901086

the feature i'm excited about is web slices. basically web slices are like rss, but they have graphics too.

i will post a review of ie8 and i'll see if it fixes my geekzone freezing problem.

Installed in a few minutes and did a restart.

It's working fine.  Seems to be a lot faster than IE 7 in terms of starting up and also browsing.

richgamer,

My name’s Feran and I’m working with the Internet Explorer Outreach Team to provide assistance and help answer questions people might have about Internet Explorer.

The official IE8 was released yesterday –People can download it here if they’d like: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/internet-explorer/default.aspx?ocid=ie8_sm_a

Let me know if it does help with your freezing problem…

Thanks!

hmm ... it seems the compatibility button appears at random ... well there must be a method behind the madness i'm sure :)

still can't insert emoticon.

a few java things still don't work. all these despite clicking compatibility button (when available).
eg moving pictures around in facebook ala minority report - in ie8 you can move the pics but you can't settle the pics, it just keeps floating around!

IE8 seems buggy - slow to load and jerky when navigating. Can't access email from toolbar either Oulook Express or Outlook 2003. Seems to be searching for MSN.

A lot of options which I declined during setup.

Can't see yet why they bothered with the new version ?

Welcome Feran...

Richgamer, I saw your post in the other discussion but it went off-topic and we locked it.

My recommendation when you have "freezing issues" with Internet Explorer is to make sure you have removed any toolbar or extension. Or at least disable those. Then try again.

Also if you have some AV software such as Norton, AVG or Avast make sure to disable the "web protection" options. In general what these options do is to create a transparent proxy on your PC and scan all pages downloaded before sending this to your browser. You can imagine this kind of feature can cause a few problems sometimes - even more because you had problems with the RC1 version of Internet Explorer 8.

In general folks, unless you are a tester and can actually determine the root cause of a problem, I suggest you stay away from beta software until it's final, like Internet Explorer 8 is now

By the way, here's an initial install report on my PCs (home and Geekzone servers):

1x Windows Home Server
1x Windows Server 2003 R2
3x Windows XP SP2 (Virtual Machines)
2x Windows Server 2008 Enterprise Edition
2x Windows Server 2008 Enterprise Edition (Hyper-v guests)

All these installed ok, and working fine... I haven't updated Windows 7 beta laptops (three) and my Media Center simply because there isn't a version for those yet.

I have downloaded this IE8 and it has not been pretty.

Firstly, the adobe flash was causing huge problems. IE8 kept throwing up security windows..."do you want to allow add-in to run:", then, i'd click the check box "do not warn about this program again".

But, the window appeared each time despite clicking the checkbox. Then, IE8 crashed. It was almost impossible to get back, nzherald / stuff are my home pages, and there is tons of flash on those. Each time i started IE8, it would crash.

Eventually, managed to get past that, reinstalled flash, and it is not crashing now.

But, this ie8 is sooo slow. Scrolling is jerky, and takes 30% fo the cpu. By comparison , scrolling in chrome takes 10% of my cpu (quad core q6600).

Just the sluggishness of the new IE8 interface is putting me off. I tried deactivating all of the plug-ins but that didn't help either.

I see reviews that say ie8 is faster than ie7, but how? I hate ie8 already.

The only reason I continue to use IE is because it has the zoom feature in the bottom right corner, which I require, as I do all my computing now on my HTPC in the lounge, and sitting from a distance, I need to wear my glasses, as well as zoom the page to 175% to see words properly.

My only major complaint about IE, that I noticed all through the Beta stage and now also apparent in the final release version, is at times, and reguarly, when opening another tab, it will not load the page requested...

Its not broadband related, as I can always open a blank tab, and put the required address in there, and it will load instantly...while the original tab, will still be trying to load.

I think it happens mostly when the tab is opened by a link in another page/tab, or an external program...but not always.

It is very irratating to say the least.
