Hello all.

I have a problem with Windows Media Player.

When I play a home video file (.mpg) the movie will play fine for a minute or so and then stops and wont play the remainder of the clip.
The slider bar returns to the start and if I try to slide it along past where it stopped and hit the play button the video will try and play for a split second and then stops again with the slider returning to the start.
This happens with all .mpg files. It will play music and dvd's no problem.
I was using WMP v11 and rolled back to v10 with the same result.
I downloaded Media Player Classic and have the same result.
I also have  VLC media player and WinDVD on the same Laptop which both play the entire clip through to the end no probs.

I would use the 2 media players that work ok and not worry about except for the fact that I also use Windows Movie Maker which is doing the same thing! It will only play a portion of each clip imported in which the screen will go black but everything else in the time line plays ok e.g. music and titles etc.

I have downloaded codecs in case that was an issue, but no change.

I have loaded and reloaded the Media Player Software, no change.

I have made sure the graphics drivers etc are up to date.

Does any one have any suggestions?

Thanks in advance

I suggest uninstalling all external codecs and codec packs and re-installing Windows Media Player 11.

If that doesn't help, then install ffdshow.

Thank you for that.

It appears that removing the external codec pack fixed the problem.

Most gratefull, I spent hours with it.

Glad that your problem is solved! That makes you the 1,512,423th* user to have faced problems by installing a codec pack. I recommend either using players that have internal codecs (VLC, GOM, KMPlayer) or simply get the exact codec you want (use GSpot to identify what codecs a file uses) if the file isn't playing in your player.

From experience, I've found that it's always better to avoid these so called "packs", "bundles", "AIOs", programs that claim to boost your computer, clean your registry etc. Oh, and always try to use a portable version of a program where possible - they're easy to move, manage and clean-up-after. :)

* Exaggerated. Of course. :P

I had same issue on my new laptop... damn codecs - hello VLC player!

All resolved too (both VLC & WMP)

Cheers, Stevo
