Hi there,

I am currently running Vista on my ASUS G1-S laptop. With RAM at 2GB, it runs Ok.
I want to setup an OS as a virtual machine so I can play and experiment - without doing irrepairable damage to my work laptop.

I've just setup Windows 7 as that virtual machine (using VMWare) and it runs really well....but when it is running my Vista host gets all slow and grumpy. No surprises I guess.

What I want to be able to do is work on my Vista laptop - but when i get a spare moment, switch over to my virtual Windows7 to have a play, try some VB.NET development etc. I need to be able to instantly switch back to my Vista machine when the phone rings or I need to do something.

I toyed with the idea of saving my Vista setup as a tib file using Acronis, putting it away for safe keeping and then installing Windows7 as the host - where I do my work - and keeping another Windows7 as a Vm for where I do my playing....but I'm too chicken to rely on Windows7 just yet.

Others have suggested using dual boot - but this prevents me from switching back and forth at will.

Does anyone have any other ideas? I guess I could host the VM on a server and RDP into ut when I want to play...but this requires an internet connection - which I don't have when I'm on holiday in Whangamata.

The options may be limited given what I am trying to achieve and the apparent hardware constraints - but just thought I would put it out there....

Thanks!

Are you using ReadyBoost for either OS?  It would take some pressure of the hdd and reduce disk swapping.  Not many people know about it or use it but I use ReadyBoost on all my machines where possible.

Two USB thumb drives one for Vista's ReadyBoost cache and another one for Windows 7's could provide a decent boost if disk speed / memory is the limiting factor.

Have you tried Virtual PC rather than VMWare, no idea which peforms better but it's probably worth trying.

Worse case.. consider upgrading the laptop's ram to 4GB I guess or perhaps pickup a cheap netbook (even a 2nd hand eeepc or something) for trying out Windows 7.

Thanks for that. I had heard of ReadyBoost - will give it a go and see if it helps.
I tried Virtual PC initially then moved to VM Ware because "someone" told me it was faster...

If I upgrade the laptops RAM to 4GB, will all of it be accessible by the OS's? I heard that under the 32bit version of Vista, there was a maximum amount of RAM which could be accessed...was it 3GB or 3 point something...
I guess either way it's better than 2GB. And Vista runs fine on 2GB and Windows7 on 1GB - so that adds up to 3. That sounds like my second try (after ReadyBoost). Thanks for your suggestions & links!
