A mate of mine enjoys watching YouTube videos on sites such as surf.co.nz . Recently he has found that they won't play when embedded in this(and) other sites but he can still go directly to YouTube and play them fine.

I have got him to check things such as Activex permissions, reinstall flash and he has upgraded from IE7 to 8 to no avail.

The site mentioned above seems to use standard object/param and embed for inserting the video.

Any suggestions for fixes would be appreciated. Last I heard he was standing over the computer with a water jug!

Edit..
I jyst read-re your message and is the problem that its a problem on his computer only? everyone else can view them ok fine?

\
I know about this well because of a couple of the websites I run myself.

Some videos on youtube are set to not be able to be embedded remotely. (So people are forced to go to youtube). If up to the person who put the video up if they set this option or not.

If you are using youtube's player you will get the message saying it it not embeddable normally or another message but if you are using another player to play the youtube videos (via the youtube API) you should be able to check this and just not offer it/show it

Thanks

Yeah, and just to clarify, the vids in question are on such sites as surf.co.nz, tvnz and surf2surf.co.nz. On the latter site, I can still see some of the vids (the You Tube ones for example), but not all. And up until four or five days ago, I could see all of them on all the above sites. Another site that has stopped working for me is the live stream on www.billabongpro.com however, I can see the highlight videos fine. AND, by switching from the viewer on that website during the streaming when the surfing is live - that I can't see - it still works when I open up the windows media player option. Any help welcome thanks! Cheers

Can you post a link to the videos that don't work for you on surf.co.nz or any of the other sites, see if any others have the problem?

hmm works ok for me on firefox, chrome and IE, this is the video's orginal youtube page: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9x8vz4vRcj0 is that working for you(you should be able to click in an embedded youtube video to open the orginal youtube page)?

THe other problem - the live stream watching - might be unrelated to this youtube problem, it could be a bandwidth problem on their side with serving the stream or on your side if you're sharing a connection or if at school or work (do they have a policy to block video)?

Have you got the latest version of wndows media player installed - the live stream and tvnz's site use this.

Yep, I can access that clip via the link you provided...then i've just gone back to surf.co.nz to the clip there and no joy!

As for the live streaming, it worked fine in the windows media player option on the Billabongpro website, BUT, I got the same 'broken link' or 'app not available' graphic in the top left hand corner of the window of the video player on the website itself. My connection is not at work or school - just adsl on a home PC.

I am clearly no computer expert but my guess is something on the computer or in my browser is not talking to something on the website or vice versa. Maybe I or one of my kids has accidently changed a setting somewhere - maybe Internet Options - but, if so, neither Stuzzo nor myself can work out what that might be. I even hit the reset button there in Internet Options 'advanced' to return it to the 'factory' default settings. Still nothing.

Haven't got the latest version of Media Player but it's a recent one and given it was working this time last week I suspect that is not the problem.

I appreciate your thoughtsand if you have any more please post em.
Cheers

- It could be an IE addon (like a video-downloader) that's causing problems. Try starting IE with all addons disabled (Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> Internet Explorer (No Add-ons)

- Check from an alternate browser like Firefox or Opera

- Log into a different user account (or create a new one) and test the browsers there.
