Hey there.
Im in some big trouble.. Recently i got a virus which crashed my computer, and i formatted it (from vista). I then installed Windows XP, since i had a CD laying around..
The problem was, however, that i couldn't play any games - I tried Counter strike: Source, Half life and many others, and i found out it was because my graphics were too bad.
I have the GeForce 8600GTM Card, so this could not be true, because i were able to play those games totally smooth before i formatted.
The problem has to be drivers.
I'm running a Fujitsu Siemens laptop, and the problem here is, that they do not allow drivers from NVIDIA itself -
only from their own website, because drivers have to be edited to be useable on those computers..
So, i look at the website.. And only Windows Vista drivers are available.. I try one of them, and of course it will not work.
The problem is that i do not have a Vista CD to reinstall vista, so i cannot do that.. Then i saw that Winows 7 was downloadable from microsoft.
I formatted once again, and installed windows 7, because people say that i can just use vista programs and drivers and that they will be fully functional on a windows 7..
So, i go to fujitsus site and get all the drivers for vista.. I install them one by one, and restart after each one..
All the chipboard drivers and so on work totally fine, but when i get to the screen driver and install it, it asks me to restart.
I restart, and then windows wont load. It starts loading and the logo shows up like its loading, and then it just freezes.
I've tried to leave it like that for several hours, and that did not work. I have tried running it in compatibility mode for vista, too, and that did not work either.
The only way i can get back into vista is to use windows restore to set the computer to an  drtime, so that the drivers are removed again. Then it boots fine.
I NEED THOSE DRIVERS TO PLAY! And there is no point in having a computer that cannot play games.

Anyways, when i try to load just the smallest windows games, windows says:
Hardware acceleration is either disabled or not supported by your video card driver, which could slow game performance. Make sure you have the latest video driver installed and that hardware acceleration is turned on.
I cannot install the drivers, so im pretty much stuck. I guess this is why counter strike and the other games cannot load aswell.
When i run the windows utility to "rate my system" i get some okay scores - 4,9 for processor, 5,1 for RAM, 5,3 for hard disk transfer rate, but i only get 1,0, which is the lowest score, for gaming and normal graphics. Again, this makes me think that it is the drivers fault, since before formatting from vista i scored around 5 in both of those. When i ask it for advanced system information, it says:

Total available graphics memory Not detected
  Dedicated graphics memory 0 MB
  Dedicated system memory 0 MB
  Shared system memory 0 MB
  Display adapter driver version 6.1.7100.0
  Primary monitor resolution 1440x900
DirectX version DirectX 8 or earlier

Again, the drivers is the problem, right?

So, my questions are:
-How can i make vista drivers work perfectly with windows 7?
-Why can windows 7 not boot after installing drivers?
-Is there any way to get my windows vista back? I did not receive any CD's AT ALL when i bought the computer.
-If i find a friend with a Vista Install CD, can i borrow his and put in my reg. number?
-Is the "dedicated graphics memery: 0 MB Really the drivers fault?
-How can i fix this? I would like to keep windows 7 if possible, i just need to find out why windows detects the wrong graphics memory, and how i can fix this so i can play my games again..
-If you need any info, computer specs ect. ask me!

As you can see, i REALLY took a lot of time writing this, and i put a lot of effort into it since im quite desperate.
Therefore, i really do you some of you guys out there will help me with this...
Thanks you :)

There are a few sites that modified the inf files for reference drivers so they work on the odd laptops that are not supported by default in the nvidia reference drivers

If your recovery partition on the laptop is still intact, you should be able to perform a factory restore. Check your manual on how to go about this.

The other option is to contact Fujitsu-Siemens for sending recovery discs (they usually do it free of charge or may add shipping costs).

The third option is to borrow/download a Vista OEM DVD (Unbranded or Fujitsu) and use your existing product key.

Thank you very much, guys. It was nice of you to reply.

Would a recovery disk work to get windows vista back when i have removed it completely?

My recovery partition wont work because it gives me some error with a file missing, i bet it only works when vista is already installed, to recover it..

Anyways, browsing the net and other forums, i FOUND THE ANSWER to whats wrong!!

It is in fact the drivers that are messing up. I've tried removing the windows ones and installing the nvidia ones and it recognizes (spell?) my graphic card then. But before working 100% for playing games ect it has to restart, and then windows cannot boot. The error where the loading screen freezes up happens, and then i have to use system restore to remove the driver, then it boots up fine.

So, i have to install those nvidia drivers, and the only thing that is preventing me from it, is that the system cannot boot with them - if someone could tell me why, or give me a solution to this problem, then it would be GREAT! Any tips or ideas why this happens would be very nice, too!

So please people, post :)

Sounds like Fujitsu Siemens may have customized the onboard video hardware, if it doesn't work with the standard reference drivers or the inf modified versions available.  Did you try a few different versions of the nvidia drivers?

You may have to contact Fujitsu Siemens for drivers or wait for them to release Windows 7 drivers.

Yes, a recovery would work even if you removed vista (unless you've removed the recovery partition itself!). What error message are you getting?

Ill write down the recovery error soon. Yes, i did try different drivers. MANY different drivers. The thing that is so wierd is, that windows cannot boot when i change the stock drivers into nvidia ones.. Not even the ones i get from microsoft update. I really need to find out why.
Anyways, maybe this could help, i dont know:

When i got the error while playing CSS in the whole start, it was a blue screen. Then i was scared that it might be a virus, so while it was doing the memory thing, i held down my power button and shut down the computer. Then it would not start again. The boot screen looked really wierd - there were flickers / artifacts all over my screen, and the Fujitsu Siemens text is totally messed up. I think this might be the screen driveres fault? By boot screen - even after 2 reformats - is still totally ****ed up.
When i go to Device manager and reinstall the current windows drivers, the system can start up, and the boot screen showing the fujitsu siemens logo is not messed up. But on the next boot it is messed with up again. Could all my problem be related to the screen drivers getting messed up while i shutdown while the blue screen was working, and that could have messed so much with the driver that it cannot be replaced by nvidia ones? I dont know, maybe you guys could get me some answers? :)

Is the Laptop still under warranty? It sounds like it is a hardware fault rather then a driver issue. Even the Windows built in drivers should work fine for games. Might not be quite as fast but only by a frame or two.

Well, you can confirm if its a hardware issue by running a second OS like Linux. Run a full-fledged live cd like Knopix which would include the graphics drivers. It comes with a few 3D games as well which you can try to run.

That was a good idea!

I want to try it, but i really do not know much about Linux.

Is it hard to set up? And how do i get the CD for installing it, do i just download and burn an ISO file, like i did with windows 7? Any guides i could use on the internet? :)

Just download and burn the ISO. You don't need to know any commands or anything, it's pretty much point-and-click and self-explanatory. At this moment, there's no need to install anything and things should be up and running as soon as you boot from the CD.

You can't. To be honest I am not quite sure how much help this will provide. You video card is working (you could tell that from windows) is seems to be more a issue with the hardware acceleration hardware side which I am not sure if knopix can give you much info on.

I still think you are best off just contacting Fujitsu Siemens and getting them to have a look. At least then you know it will be fixed.

How old is the laptop? It may be that the gfx card needs a firmware upgrade to run with the latest vista drivers, I know mine did, it would work with pre 180.xx drivers but windows would freeze like yours does when using the newer drivers. Firmware update resolved this.

Thanks Pink, its a good suggestion, but i think i will just do as you guys said and send it back to fujitsu and let them have a look.
Today i booted Knoppix and it had wierd artifacts all over the screen even when booted, so im starting to think that this is a hardware problem, and im sure its a problem i cannot fix myself anyways.
The computer is only a year and a couple months old, but i bought extra guarantees so im sure i can send it in.
I will try this, and tell you guys how i do.
Thanks for the help everyone, much appreciated! :)
